4/14/19 – Utica Comets vs. Syracuse Crunch

Queue up the music boys, it’s the end of the season…and its been a sad one

Tonight is the final game of a rather disappointing regular season for the Canucks Farm Team…but we end the season on a bit of a bittersweet note as Jaime Sifers suits up for his final game of pro hockey. Fingers crossed the squad can pull it together on this final home game of the season for the old man Sifers so they can end his career on a good one. I mean, in reality Fridays 8-1 ought to have been his final game of the season, because that shit was fucking ridiculous. The team put together a great pre-game ceremony for Jaime with an ice video package, and bringing his wife and kids out for a big award presented by the management team and everything…lil dusty in my room when that happened, really bizarre timing

Oh shit Reid Boucher gets the MVP award but he isn’t dressed to play, kind of shitty for the team to not have him again,

TBH I don’t really care about the pre-amble to this one…its Syracuse…they’re fucking good…Utica…is pretty bad…tonight’s game is more about Sifers getting a good game to end his career on and maybe some of the young guys turn up huge again. So lets get into tonight’s lineup and the final game of the season!

Apparently Jim Benning IS here tonight for the game so perhaps the team channels some Dig Bick Jim Energy

Starting Lineup

LW C RW
Bancks Woods MacEwen
Pyatt Kero Lind
Gadjovich Darcy Gaunce
Arseneau Hamilton Jasek
LD RD
Sifers LeBlanc
Thow Graham
Pratt Blujus
G
Marek Mazanec

Looks like the new guy PTO Derek Pratt slots in for Brandon Anselmini.

Also with Reid Boucher out of the lineup, Kole Lind slots up to the top line, and then some additional shuffling of Gadjovich to the third line with Cam Darcy and Brendan Gaunce, while Vincent Arseneau comes off the bench to play with Hamilton and Jasek…not really sure how that will work…tbh I’d have rather seen that Gadj/Hamilton/Jasek stick together as they’ve looked great for the last 4 games together.

Streamable Clarity Improvement Notice

Continuing with last issues theme, going to be Players full name (jersey number) – place in streamable (if not outright obvious) then every sub sequential play featuring that player it’ll be last name(jersey number) – place in streamable (if not outright obvious) I’m also going to reduce the amount of hyperlink in the GOAL streamables, since that’s what I think MOST people are here for and don’t want some gaudy blue taking up the screen.

1st period

Comets in the green/white alternates

Score at the end of the first period: 1-0 Crunch

Well they started strong! 9 shots to the Crunches 4; Mazanec has to be much stronger in goal to give this team a chance against the Crunch who capitalize HARD on their opponents mistakes. Too many shots from the blue line from this team but I think they feel they can’t get in close against Syracuse as their D-group is very good at clogging up the slot areas and preventing setups in around the net. Powerplay also has to be MUCH better at setting up faster. Especially since no one has nearly as quick of a shot as Boucher.. they have to be quicker on their one timer setups to even have a chance of cracking one past Tolvanen. Mayhaps the JB energy is channeled in the 2nd.

2nd Period

  • no audio to start the 2nd
  • Crunch with two huge chances in the first minute of play
  • Dylan Blujus gets tripped up by aBrady Brassart, while they’re facing some serious Crunch pressure early and the Comets are off to the powerplay again
  • Once again the Comets struggle to set up on the powerplay

heads up the audio on the broadcast is absolutely fucked so there is A LOT of fuzz and feedback noise on the audio clips, I tried to balance but its just straight up shit quality whatever they’re doing right now

  • GOAL – SYRACUSE – 2-0 Crunch: Crunch score shorthanded after a horrible missed tripping penalty on Brendan Gaunce…Hell the Crunches Alex Volkov stops skating because he’s expecting the whistle to stop play…but alas no call is made and Otto Somppi races all alone down the ice to deke Mazanec for the backhand shorthanded goal
  • Dennis Yan tries to drop the gloves with Kole Lind but Lind doesn’t oblige…Yan to the box for fighting and unsportsmanlike conduct. Lind ALSO to the box for something?
  • On the 4-on-4, Tom Pyatt gets high sticked on a zone entry and the Comets are onto their 2nd extended 5-on-3 of the night
  • 1st Unit: MacEwen, Gadjovich, Graham, Kero, Pyatt – three one timer chances from MacEwen on the 5-on-4 but ALL are high and wide of the goal
  • Zack MacEwen(#15) with a great move along the wing for a solo drive and shot on goal
  • GOAL – UTICA – 2-1 Crunch: The Comets FINALLY capitalize on the powerplay, as Jesse Graham(#64) goes cross-ice to Lukas Jasek(# 9)for a one timer that ACTUALLY hits the goalie and Brendan Woods(#21) bats in the rebound to cut the Crunch lead in half.
  • Syracuse takes ANOTHER penalty. This time after Alexander Volkov trips Jesse Graham along the Comets end-boards
  • 1st Unit: Graham, Lind, MacEwen, Kero, Pyatt – couple shots from Lind and Graham, but the Crunch are able to clear
  • 2nd Unit: Thow, Jasek, Darcy, Gadjovich, Gaunce – some great slap passing from Jasek to try set up Gaunce and Graham. Really great quick cycling from them but they lose the zone and the powerplay ends
  • Utica have now regained the edge in shots for, with 11 to 8 so far with 6 minutes left in the period. Nice pushback from the squad in the back half of the 2nd period
  • GOAL – SYRACUSE – 3-1 Crunch: Immediately after the faceoff draw, Alexander Volkov leads a rush down to the Comets end where he cuts to the middle of the net but drop passes to Nolan Valleau who’s shot appears to bounce off a sliding Dylan Blujus(#8) stick and over the pad of Mazanec to regain the 2 goal lead
  • GOAL – UTICA – 3-2 Crunch: The Crunch fumble the puck in their own end, allowing Lukas Jasek( #9) to pick up the loose puck for a backhand pass to Brendan Woods(#2 1)who sets up Vincent Arseneau (#18)along the goal line for a shot on goal, where he catches his own rebound for the tap in goal to bring the Comets within 1 once again!
  • Otto Somppi takes a slashing penalty with 20 seconds left in the 2nd period so the Comets are off to their 7th powerplay of the game
  • Crunch win the faceoff draw and tie it up in the corner to wind down time on the period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 3-2 Crunch

Well I definitely liked the pushback in the last half of that period. Lot of pushback despite the awful goals against; Comets finish the period up 15 to 9. Like the momentum that was swinging in their favor at the end there, hopefully they can just stick with the discipline and avoid going up on the penalty kill. They just need to get more of that tic-tac-toe going around the net because its done well for them on the goals scored.

3rd Period

Well that was pure domination…3v3 will be interesting though as the Crunch have great speed and space creation. Fingers crossed! Comets outshot the Crunch 12 to 5 in that 3rd period…holy guac, we’re getting some exciting hockey for the final game of the year!

Overtime

After ALL those chances, the gametime runs out and we are going to the shootout! Do we see Sifers in the shootout? Comets held Syracuse to 0 shots in OT! Man they want to win for the old man!

Shootout

  • Syracuse starts first
  • SYRACUSE – CARTER VERHAEAGE – MISS
  • UTICA – Jaime Sifers – SAVE
  • SYRACUSE – NICK BLIGH – SCORES
  • UTICA – LUKAS JASEK – SCORES
  • SYRACUSE – NOLAN VALLEAU – loses control of the puck!!

  • Sifers goes through the line with big hugs to everyone
  • Dyson Stevenson, Mitch Vanderlaan, Jalen Chatfield, Richard Bachman, Ashton Sautner, Michael Leighton and Thatcher Demko all present for the lineup of hugs
  • Chatfield looks like he’d rather be ANYWHERE else than standing in that lineup…kind of bizarre how dead inside he looks lol…crack a smiler for your retiring brother dude jesus lol

Takeaways

  • Damn man that was almost as exciting as the 8-1 victory on Friday…Comets just absolutely coming alive in the last period and overtime session. Comets managed to hold the best team in the North Division to just 5 shots and rally back three times to earn the victory at home and close out a disappointing season in style!
  • Really great showings from the youth in tonight’s game, MacEwen had an insane game…Jasek was creating offense constantly when he was on the ice, Gaunce was playing like he was told his contract renewal depended on thonights result…Lind was playing effectively in both ends of the night. Aaron Thow probably secured himself a lineup spot for next year. Even the vets played solid too, Brendan Woods was using his speed effectively and although he got caught with a couple PIM’s he was effective all night and ended the evening with a goal and an assist on 3 shots.
  • Overall I hope the takeaway from tonight is that the Comets team CAN and SHOULD rely on the youth to carry the load of this team…Jasek and Lind were absolutely huge for this team tonight. Put some faith in your draft prospects guys! Playing the vets over and over in key situations didn’t get you guys into playoffs, so why bother with the same mantra next year??? Let the kids play! Give em ALL the icetime! They got the fire and the skill to make the wins happen! It shouldn’t even matter IF they win or not…the icetime is crucial for the learning and growth of their games! JUST PLAY EM!
  • Whats with the Canucks organization and having incredible games for retiring players?
  • Powerplay was pretty ass for the most part, but 2 for 8 against the divisions best team without Reid Boucher or Evan McEneny or Olli Juolevi holding the blue line is pretty good I suppose!

Comets Three Stars

  • Lukas Jasek – 2 key assists on goals to cut the lead of the Crunch as well as a hand in the game tying goal in the third period that lead them to a dominant OT and the shootout goal for the win *Kole Lind – dominant in both ends of play tonight, created several turnovers and led several odd man rushes off his active stick work – plus the shootout game winner!
  • Zack MacEwen – just see that fucking streamable of his end to end rush to catch that Sifers pass…jesus Christ the wheels

HM: Jaime Sifers – 4 shots on goal and created two incredibly exciting chances for the Comets in OT… a great game for the guy to end his career on

What’s Next?

Well guys it’s been an absolute blast covering the farm this season. IMO The Farmies has taken some great strides since when I first started, and I hope to grow this thing more in the offseason with my writing, ya know, keep putting blogs on the net, write about the greasy areas etc. Kind of dreaming a bit, but I’d like to catch up with some Comets players for a little review of the season and maybe get some exclusive content here…but given that I’m moving towards the end of May, it’ll be a now or never kind of thing, so fingers crossed I can put something together!

I’ve also done a lot of personal stat keeping this season, and hope to analyze everything to provide a breakdown of my interpretation of all our prospects seasons in a mass review.

Hope you all enjoyed this final Farmies of the 2018-19 season, as always, any comments, feedback or suggestions for me to improve on the Farmies series in the off-season, please let me know! Have a great summer everyone. Fuck Toronto, Fuck Boston, Fuck Messier, and Go Canucks Go.

4/13/19 – Utica Comets vs. Hershey Bears

Well r/Canucks fam, I’m not gonna lie…there’s zero chance tonight’s game comes remotely close to the greatness that was last night’s game…I’m optimistic but I’m much more a realist…

Unless Jimbo is sticking around for all three games on this road trip… in which case, maybe we get a repeat as the team channels big Jim’s dig bick energy and light up another team contending for playoffs!

A little about the Bears; they’re currently locked into 3rd place in the AHL’s Atlantic division, but will be missing Liam O’Brien tonight who got suspended for 3 games for this hit in their game last night (a4-3 victory) against the Harftord Wolf Pack. O’Brien is the teams 7th highest scorer, so maybe that plays into the Comets favor.

With that teeny tiny preamble out of the way, lets get into tonight’s lineup, which amazingly, after 7 fighting majors last night see’s nobody out of the lineup with injury! Even Tanner Kero slots back in the lineup thank god…he took a brutal blindside assault from Joseph Cramarossa last night and did not return to the game, so hopefully he’s A-ok and 100%. Lets g get into the squad’s final road game of the season!

1st period

Comets in White

  • Early pressure from the Comets again
  • Jesus Christ, Joe Roberts on the mic goes on about how new goalie Reichenbach’s brother, Bo Reichenbach was a navy seal who lost both his legs in an IED explosion, and now plays goalie in sledge hockey…jesus Christ what a warrior. Hope is brother is proud watching his brother Ty making his AHL debut tonight for the first sports organization to have been awarded a purple heart
  • LOL referees give Bears goalie, Vitek Vanecek a penalty for playing the puck outside of the designated area so the Comets are off to the powerplay
  • Jimbo must not be here; 1st Unit: Pyatt, Kero, MacEwen, Thow, Boucher
  • Holy shit Comets are playing against Canucks legend, Jayson Megna…seems unfair really
  • Comets on the powerplay and Lukas Jasek(#9) and Brendan Gaunce(#16) play give and go with some nice cross-ice feeds through traffic but Gaunce’s shot gets blockered aside by Vanecek
  • Reichenbach with a save on elite sniper Jayson Megna
  • Bears camera guy really needs to zoom out just a bit…cant see the full cycling the Comets are doing in the zone – like I KNOW Anselmini and Boucher are holding the blue line on two clearing attempts…but they aren’t showing it! Oh well…decent pressure from the Comets 1st line after facing a couple odd-man rushes the other way
  • On an offensive zone draw – Kole Lind takes an interference penalty so Comets are off to the PK
  • 1st Group: Hamilton, Bancks, LeBlanc, Sifers – a shot rises high into the side of Stefan LeBlanc he goes down for a few seconds and doesn’t move but then quickly gets up and breaks up a pass to clear the zone himself
  • 2nd Group: MacEwen, Woods, Blujus, Sifers (doubleshifted)
  • 3rd Group: Bancks and Hamilton back out again
  • Wacey Hamilton(#36) singlehandedly chewing down 19 seconds of PK time on his own after some quick end-to-end skates
  • GOAL – HERSHEY – 1-0 Bears: Nathan Walker walks down the left wing and his shot from down under catches Reichenbach off his post, where his shot deflects up off his stick and into the back of the net! Tough break for the new guy
  • Refs miss a pretty blatant tripping penalty on Stefan LeBlanc as he went to carry the puck out of the zone

Score at the end of the first period: 1-0 Bears

Well, not TOO bad of a start…new goaltender let in a very “new goaltender” type of goal against… they look to have a serious speed disadvantage in the transition game so they’ll need to be a lot better at setting up quickly and cycling efficiently in order to find success tonight. All things considered they looked pretty competitive and not TOO exhausted, which honestly, I fully expected after their dominant win agains the Pens last night. Comets barely outshot – 10 to 9 that period. Fingers crossed we get another batshit crazy second period.

2nd Period

  • yikes Kole Lind calls for a pass and tips it right to a Bears player leading to a huge chance for Hershey.. bad look lol
  • Bobby Nardella takes a high sticking penalty and the Comets are off to the powerplay early into the 2nd
  • Comets first unit gets a 1:19 to work on the powerplay until a Boucher backhand brings a stoppage in play for the 2nd unit to roll out
  • Jasek(#9) breaks up a pass on a Bears rush then picks up the puck along the blue line to spring Jonah Gadjovich(# 22) for a zone entry and shot on Vanecek
  • GOAL – UTICA – 1-1 Tie: Cam Darcy(#11) battling two Hershey players along the end boards allowing Kole Lind(#13) to pick up the puck, circle out to the side of the net and then with time and space, absolutely snipes a shot top corner off the post and in. absolute snipe
  • off the next draw, facing a rush led by Jayson Megna, Reid Boucher takes a slashing penalty to put the Comets on the penalty kill
  • uh ok even after a minute tv timeout, the referees have legit no clue who to put into the penalty box until they decide that its actually Tom Pyatt not Reid Boucher…bizarre call
  • GOAL – HERSHEY – 2-1 Bears: some pretty awful d-coverage as Jayson Megna is left sitting at the top of Reichenbach’s crease with no one on his stick letting him easily get the tap-in powerplay goal to regain the lead for Hershey
  • Lind(#13) crashing the net as Darcy(#11) attempts to set him up with the tap-in but it gets cleared down the ice, the icing gives the Comets another offensive draw
  • Kole Lind manages to draw a tripping penalty against the Bears and the Comets are off to the powerplay again
  • 1st Group: Anselmini, MacEwen, Boucher, Kero, Pyatt
  • HUGE chance for the 1st unit from Tanner Kero(#10), ending with a shot from Reid Boucher (#24)that goes off the goal post and out
  • 2nd Unit cycled out early: Jasek, Gadjovich, Lind, Gaunce, Graham – 2nd Unit has 3 zone entry attempts broken up in a row ending with a neutral zone faceoff
  • 4th line wins the neutral zone start, then gains the zone and holds with some solid cycling, but fail to get any significant shots in the Bears zone
  • some decent end to end shifts from Lind where he breaks up a breakaway pass to a Bears player, allowing Reichenbach to steer the puck to the boards to safety; then Jasek as well with a solid long end-to-end shift… some decent “200 foot” hockey, as the hockey men would say
  • on a zone breakout, a pass from Boucher gets picked off leading to 2-on-1 breakaway, but a speeding Jaime Sifers gets back to get a stick on a cross-ice feed that surely would’ve been a goal against
  • Boucher(# 24)misses a puck while holding the blue line leading to a 2-on-1 the opposite way, Reichenbach makes the save and then Boucher levels Steve Whitney after the whistle, surprised he didn’t get a penalty for that haha
  • Cam Darcy gets clipped with a high stick by Lucas Johansen and the Comets are off to the powerplay…I swear to god Darcy gets hit with a stick in the face nearly every game… Comets onto their 4th of the game
  • Darcy bleeding on the bench and campaigns for the refs to give Johansen the 4 minute double minor but they ignore him even though he’s blatantly bleeding from the nose on the bench lol
  • Gaunce has a pass picked off leading to what seems like the 15th odd-man rush against this period
  • Comets powerplay ends and they’re 0/4 on the night

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 2-1 Hershey Bears

Quite a dull affair in that second period…Comets massively outshot the Bears 16 to 9, but the actual chances had to favor the Bears in that one. Lot of giveaways in the Bears zone, springing them on odd-man rushes against…not too good, even worse than that though is their powerplay skill right now..just getting absolutely nothing done with the man advantage. Wonder where the game heads from here, but they desperately need to get something going to even this one up.

3rd Period

  • Reid Boucher not at the bench to start the third period; Lukas Jasek slots onto the 1st line for now
  • Utica looking pretty tired out there. Still pressuring occasionally into the Bears zone, but they’re looking a little late to react to the Bears set ups
  • Hershey takes a too many men penalty and the Comets are off to their 5th powerplay of the night
  • 1st Unit: MacEwen, Lind, Pyatt, Kero, Anselmini
  • Lind playing on the right wing of the powerplay so theres no one timer ability on the right side for that 1st unit so they lose possession twice off passes from Anselmini being to the wrong side of Lind
  • 2nd Unit struggles once again to even try and gain the zone and the powerplay ends…that 2nd unit struggling mightily tonight to get anything going
  • Comets caught out and a 2-on-none breakaway but Reichenbach makes the save
  • Kero(#10) gets the breakaway chance but gets pretty obviously tripped on his drive to the net somehow no call is made
  • GOAL – HERSHEY -3-1 Bears: The ensuing play, Kero slow to get up leaving 4 Comets to defend 5 Bears. and Aaron Ness sets up Shane Gersich with a brilliant pass behind Reichenbach through the crease and several Comets to put one into the very open net
  • Comets rightfully outraged that there was no call on the Kero trip that turned into a goal against
  • Jasek(#9) chooses the wrong time to not play selfishly as he has the puck in the circle with time and space but attempts to pass rink-wide to Lind(#13) instead, brutal decision there
  • well Brendan Woods(#21) TRIES to get in a tilly to try and rally up the boys…but the fight goes about as well as the Comets game tonight
  • lol Jaime Sifers gives a shove to the face of Gersich and play is instantly blown dead to give him a penalty…Two Bears skate in to shove Sifers from behind and Lind and Gadj skate in to give them the business
  • lol after all that Cam Darcy and Jonah Gadjovich sits in the bench with the Bears Tyler Lewington and Mike Sgarbossa – 4 minutes each for roughing
  • Real thin bench now for the Comets with Boucher, Woods, Darcy and Gadjovich out haha
  • 1:40 left and the goalie gets pulled for the extra man…not even sure they have enough guys on the bench to field 6
  • GOAL – HERSHEY – 4-1 Bears: had to get the alternate angle because I think the cameraman during the live feed was falling asleep or something as he zoomed in on neutral ice instead of the play unfolding lol. Anyways Lucas Johansen steps up to the blue line as its attempted to be kept in and his shot is right on target.

Final Score: 4-1 Hershey Bears

Takeaways

  • JB must’ve left cause that looked MUCH more like the Comets I’m used to
  • Not sure what happened to Boucher but that third period was all kinds of messy, from the powerplay to the dynamics of the team, everyone just looked completely off in their timing with their new linemates.
  • Once again the Comets outshoot their opponent badly; 32 to 26 total but just suck at generating significant chances on net. 5 powerplay attempts and each one a complete goose-egg; I actually kind of HOPE JB was around for this game too so he could see the REAL look at this teams veteran core and see that outside of speed, there’s just not all too much there going on.

Comets Three Stars

  • Kole Lind – 2 goals in 2 games!
  • Luke Schenn and the staff at the Comets for his development
  • Ty Reichenbach for trying

What’s Next?

Comets wrap up their season with a home game tomorrow afternoon against the Syracuse Crunch. Syracuse is currently the lead of the AHL’s North Division and have pretty well destroyed the Comets this season…so kind of a shitty draw to end the Comets season on haha. Maybe they bench literally everybody because of how shit Tampa is doing against Columbus and the Comets get a total freebie…although that being said, the Comets could barely score on wide open nets at this point in the season so I don’t know if swapping the roster for an ECHL squad will make much of a difference.

Until tomorrow folks! This has been another depressing issue of the Farmies and from the bottom of my heart, I’m sorry I jinxed it and doomed the team from the start with my prediction. Also sorry for the lack of streamables in this one. but blame the team for that one…they just genuinely didnt do much of anything worth complimenting or examining. a very dull affair.

4/12/19 – Utica Comets vs. WBS Penguins

What’s up R/Canucks! The season is dead…but there is still hockey to be seen from the farm team! Tonight the farm squad faces off against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Penguins sit precariously in 6th place in the AHL’s Atlantic division, and are currently riding a 2 game losing streak; a pretty awful time to go on a losing streak when you’re literally THIS CLOSE to Calder playoffs! Sneaking into the 5th place spot with only 4 points behind the Providence was the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, who currently PLAY against Providence tonight!

For the Penguins sake they need Lehigh to beat Providence and then lose their final game of the season…and they need to win all 3 of their triple header games this weekend to surge past Providence…a pretty tall task!

On the other hand there’s our lovable band of misfit players, the Utica Comets, who’s struggles transcend time and space, that’s how awful they’ve been…but at least it isn’t for a lack of trying…they’re playing their hearts out but the skill is what we really need for them to win games and score goals, something that has just NOT happened the past month and a half.

So Tonight is zero expectations…one team is fighting for their lives and the other is a hodge podge of players struggling to try and make it work! Lets get into tonight’s match and see how the Farm starts off their final 3 games of the season!

Starting Lineup

LW C RW
Bancks Woods MacEwen
Gaunce Darcy Lind
Gadjovich Hamilton Jasek
Pyatt Kero Boucher
LD RD
Sifers LeBlanc
Anselmini Graham
Thow Blujus
G
Marek Mazanec

Pretty stoked to see Kole Lind and Tanner Kero return from injuries; Kero because he’s actually a pretty legit hockey player and playmaking centerman, and Lind because the more prospects on the farm to cover, the better!

The team had a mass-exodus of their ECHL talent to their ECHL affiliated teams as they all head into playoffs for the Kelly Cup. Hard to believe we can even field a team after shedding, Saucerman, Thomas, Petgrave and Kulbakov, but after ditching the playoff bound ECHL’ers we picked up some others NOT heading into playoffs; Goaltender Ty Reichenbach and Defensemen Connor Doherty and Derek Pratt.

I know the sub and myself harp on the Utica team for their deployment of perceived “career AHL’ers” and “ECHL level talent”… but dammit, I genuinely want Vinny Arseneau playing hockey for this team…at least he hits and can score fucking goals…. Pyatt, Bancks, Darcy, Lind, hell you could make an argument that the majority of this lineup is completely ineffective as of late…but Arseneau’s playstyle has actually been damn effective lately.

Comets in Blue

Score at the end of the first period: 1-0 Comets

Solid start for the Comets! And once again I feel like I’m spending my intermission periods gushing about the improvements in Gadjovich’ skating and all-around game…Like the look of his line with Jasek and Hamilton – Hamilton brings the speed and Jasek is a crafty playmaker and passer so these guys have been looking dynamite all night so far! Comets outshot the Baby Pens 14 to 8 after 20 minutes

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 7-1 Comets

Well that was probably the best period of hockey I think I’ve watched from the Comets all god damn season…kids are playing great…vets are playing for their positions…. Boucher gets a fucking natural hatty in the span of 13 minutes… they’re impressing man, great show for the fans. Comets continue the onslaught, outshooting the Penguins 17 to 9 in the second period – outshooting them 31 to 17 across 2. No clue where the game goes from here… lot of guys due to sit in the bench serving out their fighting majors

Takeaways

  • I feel like I just watched the most exciting game of Comets hockey all season right here…Team played great in all areas of the game, powerplay, penalty kill, their grit/60 was through the roof! The Jim Benning effect was in full force for this one as practically everyone on this team played out of their minds.
  • Great games from the youth in this one, Lind with 1 goal on 2 shots, Jasek with 1 goal and 2 assists, Gadjovich with the opening goal a fight and 2 shots and Zack MacEwen with 2 assists a fight and 2 shots on goal
  • The vets stepped up huge too, Wacey Hamilton was flying like a bullet out there and ended his night with 2 assists a fight and 2 shots on goal, Jaime Sifers ended the game with 1 goal on 5 shots, Brendan Woods also played great although he didn’t see it on the scoresheet, the guy was a penalty killing machine tonight and created numerous takeaways tonight that lead to extended possession for the team. Tom Pyatt with a goal and 2 assists and 4 shots, yeah all in all a great game overall for the team.
  • Nobody cares about the goalie streamables, but Mazanec had himself the first bonafide impressive performance since joining the Comets. Stopped NUMEROUS odd man rush chances against and ended the night saving 25 of 26 shots.
  • As much as I gush about how solid this game was to watch, I hope JB and Ryan Johnson watching this game didn’t come away with it thinking, “we have to resign these AHL vets to another year” I think Jasek, Gadj, Lind and Gaunce showed that they can eat big minutes in big roles and produce…they just need some faith from the coach to be given those roles. They’re playing great together.
  • Reid Boucher is a great AHL scorer, no doubt. But what no one talks about is his playmaking…on the powerplay he is as good a quarterback as the Comets best D, as he has probably the best cross-ice passes of anyone (see the Pyatt whiff streamable) he set up Gadjovich and Jasek numerous times over trying shots for himself…so unselfishly he was helping his young guys create offense…and because his shot is so deadly at this level of play, he’s like Pettersson where you HAVE to cover him otherwise he can just make your goalie look stupid with the speed of his shot. Would HOPE they re-sign him to at least a two way contract so that he could get a look on the Canucks crap-ass powerplay because having more than JUST 2 guys who can rifle lasers on net would be great.

What’s Next?

The Comets come back tomorrow for an away game against the Hershey Bears. Da Bears sit locked in 3rd place in the AHL’s Atlantic division, and given how close they are to playoffs, I’m not really too sure if they’ll even ice their main AHL roster so the Comets COULD have another impressive outing, especially if Jim Benning is sticking around for the weekend to see how they do.

Big oof too btw, the Providence Bruins lost to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, so couple that with the Penguins brutal loss tonight and they are officially out of the Calder hunt. RIP

Anyways this Farmies felt so refreshing to write and cover, I hope you all enjoyed the game as much as I did..tehre was a fuckload to unpack from this one but oh boy was it all good stuff! I’ll see you all back here tomorrow for the Farmies 2nd last issue of the season!

4/7/19 – Utica Comets vs. Providence Bruins

Good Sunday to you all! The Comets are back in action to complete the triple header, this time they’re continuing the road trip along the I-84 to Providence Rhode Island to face off against the Boston Bruins farm team, the Providence Bruins!

Providence sits precariously in 4th place in the AHL’s Atlantic division after splitting the first two games of their weekend triple-header with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Given that the Bruins are only 3 points up on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins…they’re in a bit of desperation mode to try and get as much separation as possible heading into next weekend’s triple header. So despite the joy and happiness of the Comets busting up another dreadful losing streak; todays match will NOT be easy by any stretch as they will be facing a team with a lot of fire and motivation to win.

Quite a lot of good came out of last nights win; Zack MacEwen scored a goal (an empty netter) for the first time since March 6th ending a massive scoring drought for him. Jonah Gadjovich also scored in his second game back from a 7 game stint on IR.

Overall I thought the Comets had a VERY good game last night (albeit it was against the Atlantic divisions’ last place team) but those are the kinds of games that help to inspire and rally a struggling team to elevate their compete level! With that, lets get into today’s game!

LW C RW
Pyatt Darcy Boucher

Gadjovich Gaunce Jasek

LOL I genuinely do not see what Cull see’s in Petgrave that Graham and Saucerman are the ones exchanging turns in and out of the lineup. He’s a big guy who can transition the puck from his end to the other but the lapses while holding the blue line in the offensive zone are too frequent to warrant being a constant start in the lineup.

Ivan Kulbakov steps in to round out the weekend, the Kalamazoo Wings playoff run doesn’t start until this weekend so it’s probably great timing he was able to join them on this triple header weekend on such short notice

Cant say i disagree with Vanderlaan scratch…he really didn’t seem to offer much while playing, wasn’t really a dynamic skater (which would be necessary for a guy his size) didn’t have that impressive of a passing game either and generally was pretty forgettable for the most part, which is about the last thing you want to be on a team that is desperate for standout players in the final stretch of this wash of a season.

1st period

Comets in white

Score at the end of the first period: 1-0 Comets

Once again a pretty decent start for the Comets! Powerplay was a bit shit, but even strength they were doing a better job at setting up in the zone than Providence was; Comets outshot Providence 10 to 8 in the first, and that’s after 2 pretty dominant powerplays from Providence…so Comets looking strong at even strength here today.

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 1-1 Tie

Well that wasn’t the WORST period of Comets hockey I’ve ever seen…but I’m not liking the momentum the Bruins were generating towards the end of that period. Shots favored the B’s 11 to 9 in the second; shots after the game are now tie at 19 apiece. Comets need to work on the discipline a bit and try to avoid the penalty kill, because even at even strength they’ve had a few instances of getting absolutely hemmed into their own end for several minutes at a time, which usually doesn’t bode well for energy levels on the last game of a triple header weekend in a tie game situation.

3rd Period

NOW at this point I actually left to go do a home inspection so everything from here on out was reviewed on Monday haha

Takeaways

  • Well despite a strong start, the suffocating pressure of the Providence Bruins proved too much for an exhausted Comets team. Shots were even at 6 a piece in the final frame, but the numerous times where the Comets were stuck in their end unable to change appeared to do them in. I never played hockey, but I imagine being on the penalty kill 4 times in a game as well as being caught in your own end at even strength for more than 2-3 minutes at a time on NUMEROUS occasions, isn’t great for the ol’ lactic acid buildup. Too bad because they started pretty strong.
  • Fairly disappointing to see Zack MacEwen so frustrated out there, you can see the effort is there for him, and he’s trying his hardest to create offense, but the pucks are just not ending up where they need to be. Haven’t seen a slap shot from this guy since January; a bulk of this guy’s goals and points earlier this season came off quick one timers off the draw in the circle but that seems to have evaporated as of late. Not sure if its just late season fatigue, the lack of a true dynamic offensive center to play with or what…but it sucks seeing the guy teeming with frustration out there.
  • Kulbakov looked good in his return with the Comets; really bailed them out on numerous occasions during those periods of time where all 5 players were completely gassed and incapable of breaking up the pressure.

What’s Next?

The Comets return this Friday for another triple header; first up is a home game against the Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins. The Penguins have 3 games left in their schedule and sit 5 points back of Providence for the last Calder Playoff spot of the Atlantic division. Going to be some absolutely desperate hockey from them (as Providence displayed Sunday) so hopefully the Comets are well rested and prepared for their 2nd to last home game of the season against a very tough competitor.

As far as I know I don’t have any homebuying stuff to keep me occupied this weekend so IN THEORY, I’ll have Farmies ready to go as quick as possible!

4/6/19 – Utica Comets vs. Hartford Wolf Pack

With the Canucks season ending today against the Blues, we turn to the Farm team for something to look forward too! Unfortunately they’ve lost four consecutive games and haven’t won a game in regulation in their last 20! They haven’t won a road game in 8 straight games and have been outscored 34-10 during those 8.

The Major Slumps from guys who had run QUITE hot this season,

  • Zack MacEwen – 7 games without a point, last goal march 6th
  • Brendan Gaunce – 3 points in last 17 games, last goal February 17th

Tanner Kero remains on IR due to concussion protocol, Seamus Malone was released from his Amateur Tryout contract…I hope to god that’s a formality and an AHL deal is being worked on….if they gave up on him despite his 3 goals in 6 games then I officially give up on Ryan Johnson and Jim Benning…moreso on Jim Benning because according to Sportsnet 650, he’s looking to visit Utica this weekend (for the first time this season) to “find out from the coaches what exactly happened this season”

Remember when John Tortorella was vilified by the media and market for having not made any effort to talk with the Farm team during his tenure with the Canucks? How is it not a bigger talking point that the “draft/scouting guru” Jim Benning has made absolutely no effort to see how his system is doing? Why now?

Does this imply that when Carcone, Archibald, Nilsson and Dahlen were moved, he had absolutely no discussions or idea of what was going on with the farm at that time and just kind of assumed his moves would work out? I cant even put into words how baffled I am that he’s NOW making an effort to find out what the fuck happened to the season…as if he needs it spelled out for him in big block letters. You called up the entire team…your best players got season ending injuries….and the lack of prospect depth in the system caused your farm team to rely on ECHL players for the majority of this season due to terrible asset management. How is a top-to-bottom review of the organizations prospect pool and depth charts happening NOW? … I remember getting downvoted to oblivion for suggesting that there was a serious concern to be had about the lack of communication between both the Canucks and the Comets organizations (regarding the Palmu move and Dahlen trade) but this kind of affirms my fear that the Canucks brass has been operating with terrible information about their farm team which is completely unacceptable.

Incessant whining aside, tonight the Comets face off against the Hartford Wolf Pack, the New York Rangers farm club. The Wolf Pack sit dead last in the AHL’s Atlantic division, having had a similar string of losses as the Comets as they’ve gone 0-4-1-0 in their last 5. It aint no 1-8-1-0 in their last 10…but we can take solace knowing that its not JUST the Comets having some tough times lately! Maybe this meeting between two struggling clubs will lead to some exciting gameplay as both teams are out of playoff contention and will be looking to just play some exciting hockey!

1st period

Comets in white

Score at the end of the first period: 2-0 Comets

Feels like a lifetime since I left a period of Comets hockey thinking this team was looking sharp, or even held a substantial lead for that matter! They dominated the Wolf Pack and capitalized on their chances, something they were seriously lacking in previous first period efforts. They outshot the Wolf Pack 17 to 8…and to be honest I almost call bullshit on the 8 shots from Hartford, cause they really spend 17 of those 20 minutes in their own end. Like what I see, maybe now that pressure of a playoff push is off, they are playing a bit more loose?

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 3-0 Comets

Impressive period again from the Comets as they absolutely hammer the Wolf Pack over the period with sustained pressure in their end…Shots were much closer (8 to 5) but the possession numbers would show pure dominance from Utica once again…Think collective time spent in Uticas end was less than 2 minutes total that period. Like what I see from the youth line of Jasek/Gadj/Gaunce, MacEwen looking good with his chances on the Woods/Bancks line. Pyatt/Boucher/Darcy line was a bit quiet at even strength…was basically the youth line and the Mac line spending every shift of theirs hemming the Wolf Pack in their end. 1 more to go, lets hope some of the other guys can end their scoring droughts tonight!

3rd Period

  • whole lot of nothing through the first 7 minutes of the period, lot of end to end skating but no significant shots on goal from either team, possibly even any
  • and just like that the Wolf Pack’s Brandon Crawley gets dinged for tripping and the Comets are off to the powerplay
  • 1st unit out for the draw: MacEwen, Boucher, Darcy, Pyatt, Thow
  • Boucher(#24) with a slick cross-ice pass to Pyatt(# 20) on the powerplay, then drives to the net to try and catch Pyatt’s rebound
  • 2nd Unit gets a few shots that bounce of Huska but they lose the zone and the powerplay ends
  • Hartford with more possession in the Comets zone this period than the previous two combined
  • Wolf Packs Ryan Gropp takes a slashing penalty on a Comets zone entry and Boucher just hands the puck to the ref to stop play LOL, off to their 4th powerplay of the game
  • 2nd Unit out to start: Thow, Saucerman, Gadjovich, Jasek, Gaunce
  • Powerplay units struggling to get anything going this time around…1st unit rolls out and two times in a row they are caught offside on the entry leading to neutral zone starts…shame
  • Lines being shifted up a bit. Jasek now out with Bancks and Woods – Gadjovich out with MacEwen and Gaunce – not sure what precipitated the line switch up? Wasn’t an injury I don’t think…perhaps just due to the powerplay shifts shaking out I guess
  • 3 minutes remaining and Adam Huska gets pulled for the extra man
  • can’t stand when they pull the goalie this early, it usually leads to soooo many icings since that’s all the defending team can usually manage to do
  • Jaime Sifers comes up clutch with a huge shot block while being hemmed in their end facing the 6 man Wolf Pack
  • The first draw the Comets KIND OF win and Brendan Woods sends his shot on the empty net, WIDE
  • GOAL – UTICA – 4-0 Comets: The Comets finally manage possession after several defensive draws in their end as Brendan Woods(#21) picks off a pass and sets up Carter Bancks(#34) to saucer a pass to a streaming MacEwen(#15) who walks it into the empty net. MacEwen with his first goal since March 6th…brutal stretch of puck luck for the guy
  • Mazanec gets his first win with the Comets as a starter with a 21 shot shutout. Good victory for the boys!

Takeaways

  • boy it feels good to cover a win; nay, a DOMINANT win…Comets were effective everywhere tonight, the powerplay, penalty kill, neutral ice, the corners, they were just all over the Wolf Pack through those first two periods and it pays off as they get a much deserved 4-zip victory.
  • Really solid games from Gadjovich and MacEwen tonight…I mean altogether I think most lines played really good…I would hope that Cull elects to NOT sit out Saucerman for Sundays afternoon game as he looked sharp tonight offensively AND defensively while paired with a guy who I think has had a very rough go in his stint with the Comets!
  • Hopefully this victory inspires a bit of confidence in the boys going into tomorrows game against the Providence Bruins. There were some key scoring droughts ended tonight and I hope that despite the lack of purpose to their remaining 4 games of the season, they just go out there to try and have fun and score some goals and impress for next year!

What’s Next?

The Comets return tomorrow afternoon for another road game, this time against the Boston Bruins farm team, Providence. Providence is coming off a two game stint against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, where they first won an insane 8-6 victory at home on Friday followed by a 4-3 loss on the road. Providence sits 4th in the AHL’s Atlantic division, up by only 3 points on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins so they are going to be playing some desperate hockey to end their triple header with some badly needed points to separate from the Pens for a playoff slot.

Tomorrow I am going to be out with the home inspector checking out our new place, so positive vibes from the r/canucks fam are needed as if this place doesn’t work out then I’ll be in serious shit; having to find a NEW place to live in less than 60 days is quite less than ideal…so fingers crossed from everyone is needed that the place has no unexpected issues and works out great!

That being said, I hope to have a recap of the game done ideally tomorrow night, if not then, maybe Monday night depending on the home inspection results! Have a great rest of your weekend guys!

4/5/19 – Utica Comets vs. Toronto Marlies

Whats up R/Canucks, the Farmies is back after a week long layoff! I unfortunately missed last Saturdays game due to personal issues (if you’ve been keeping up with the Farmies, you’ll know I’m in the process of trying to lock down a new place to live before May 31st, so finding time available to recap and review the Farm lately has been tough!).

Given that the Comets are FIGHTING for a playoff spot, it felt like a good place to restart the timely recapping…as the Comets wrap up their season with two triple header weekends, with the first match being tonight against the Toronto Marlies.

I believe mathematically, all it will take for the Comets to be eliminated is the Cleveland Monsters earning a win in regulation tonight. Essentially, the Comets do need to win all 6 of their upcoming games to have a shot at getting 4th in the division…to be completely honest even if they do get there I don’t know if the current lineup is even capable of making any kind of splash. But regardless it should be a VERY exciting weekend for the Farm as they battle their hearts out to keep their season alive.

Looks like Jonah Gadjovich returns from a lengthy IR stint as well as centermen and PK specialist Wacey Hamilton…slotting out of the lineup are a long list of injuries (some which were picked up in the uncovered Saturday game, that will be done LATE tonight!)

Also making their debuts tonight are Mitch Vanderlaan, a 5’7” NCAA ATO from Cornell University (ever heard of it?); plus Aaron Thow, another NCAA graduate from Clarkson University on an ATO. So unlike MANY games in the past few months, a lot of prospects in tonights matchup worth watching!

Not a bad penalty at all from the Comets! Great periods of play from Woods, Gadjovich, Boucher and LeBlanc! Shots even at 8 a piece; but it really felt like the Comets held control of that entire period from beginning to end

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 1-0 Marlies

Wellp, Comets really need to shore up their discipline and get back in this one…they’re picking up loose pucks and doing well to enter the Marlies zone, but their shots on goal are just so predictable…just constantly into the breadbasket or gloveside…switch it up guys! YOUR SEASON IS ON THE LINE HERE!!!! Leighton being out for the rest of this triple header weekend is pretty terrifying for the playoff dream…Mazanec has lost every start, and been pulled twice while with Utica. *something something JB 7th round pick*

Takeaways

  • The Cleveland Monsters won in regulation tonight, so with their victory and the Comets loss, they have been mathematically eliminated from Calder Playoffs
  • What a heartbreaker to end the Comets season…they absolutely dominated the Marlies, but couldn’t bury their chances when they had them, and the refs certainly didn’t help them either… losing MacEwen with ten remaining….the horrific non calls around the Marlies net that seemingly happened over and over ad-nauseum…just a brutal way to see them lose.
  • Like Aaron Thow’s game, looked very competent defensively and offensively, looked to be a better powerplay runner than Graham/Petgrave or any other Comets defenseman the past 2 months. Decent speed as well, I think given more games he could develop some solid chemistry with the guys and produce more
  • Brendan Woods had himself a fucking game man, I genuinely feel bad for him, he was playing out of his mind; chances nearly every single period, skating fast, hard, 3 shots on the night, crashing the net constantly…its really too bad every single player on this team has forgotten how to score goals, because on any other normal night, his goal tonight would just be a footnote…but guy was playing great…
  • its been an absolutely horrific couple months for the Comets…injuries galore…losing streaks galore…call-ups galore…this is barely a team… I know we praise JB for his ability to draft NHL ready players…but his cupboard building has been godawul… look up the number of draft picks on Tampa Bays farm team and ECHL squad, its actually crazy that we consider Judd Bracket and the JB/JW squad as “draft gods” but really, after 5 years…we finally get 7 draft picks into our farm lineup, 1 is a bonafide NHL centerman stuck behind “heart and soul grinders” that the Canucks MUST have at all times, 1 who the coach doesn’t like and thus leaves for Liiga, 1 blows out his knee early, so we have 4 left and at the end of a season of constant disappointment, we’re left wondering…is this really it? Don’t get me wrong I have faith that one of if not, two of Gadjovich/Lind or Jasek CAN crack an NHL roster…but again after that…there’s just soooooo little. Tampa Bay called up 1 or draft picks this year due to injury so you know what they did, they called up 3 guys they drafted in 2014 and 2015 to fill the void. That’s how much faith they put into their drafting…they plug them into the lineup and build around them…here we just threw them in with our hodge-podge of AHL players and said, “I dunno, the leagues tough…try scoring!” It aint working chief! This aint it!
  • I genuinely hope that draft guru JB and co put more concerted effort in creating a farm team that can actually help our draft propsects grow…I don’t want to see Lukas Jasek stuck on the third or 4th lines playing with the Carter Bancks and Reid Gardiners of the AHL/ECHL… surely for a team in a rebuild, they can do better… surely we can do better than trading our U23 players for stop-gaps due to injuries, year-in, year-out…. Carcone, MacMaster, Dahlen net out for a net in of Stefan LeBlanc, Josh Leivo and Linus Karlsson…one guy who’s been OK in the NHL playing with the teams best players, a guy who’ll probably be a depth call up maximum, and a guy projected to most likely be a bust OR A FRINGE NHL player. WE HAVE TO DO BETTER FOR OUR PROSPECTS
  • Dude I’m sorry, but please stop playing Matt Petgrave…I bet he’s a great locker room guy and all that … but jesus the guy is a turnover machine, CONSTANTLY…he can’t hold a blue line to save his life either…its like his depth perception changes when he’s in the offensive zone. A majority of those 1st unit powerplays were lost because off poor puck control by Petgrave on the blue line… I keep saying it over and over agin…Cull clearly sees something more in Petgrave than I do…but please for the love of god play Colton Saucerman over Petgrave…I get that he’s smaller stature but he can actually shoot from the blue line, skates hard, fights if he has to, battles along the boards, but more importantly he can actually defend!
  • Respect to the Utica faithful for cheering their boys on even as they head down the tunnel…it has been a fucking brutal stretch for this AHL team and I have nothing but respect for the Utica crowd for showing up every night despite the misery… Think they had a better attendance record this past month than friggin Florida for god sakes

What’s Next?

The Comets season now over, they head into tomorrow evenings game on the road against the Hartford Wolf Pack with basically zero expectations…I’m kind of hoping we get Petgrave out of the lineup and we see Saucerman out there..I think he’s earned the right to compete for a 3rd pair/7th D spot for next season. We know what we got in Graham and as fast as he is, if he can’t score or defend with his speed then there isn’t much point to seeing him out there…I’d like to see Sauce/Woo/Thow out there with Blujus/Sifers/LeBlanc in any kind of combination…I’m done with Pet/Graham this season I think. Give Aaron Thow more ice time…I think he’s worth a hard look.

Despite the way the Comets season ended, It’s been a god damn pleasure doing the Farmies this season for you guys, I hope to continue this into next year as well, Thanks for baring with me as I try to manage recapping games with buying a house, it hasn’t been easy but know I appreciate you guys’ readership and comments! I’ll see you all tomorrow night! (and possibly LATE tonight as I review last Saturdays game)
