12/29/18 – Utica Comets vs. Rochester Americans

Wellp. Here we are, back again with another edition of the Farmies; last night went about as poorly as any game of hockey could go for a team. Outshot 41 to 33, abysmal powerplay going 0 for 6, two goalie substitutions, first team in the AHL this season to allow 10 goals against, 3 shorthanded goals against IN A ROW, totaling 12 on the season for the league HIGHEST…….I mean…it LITERALLY could not have been a worst game from our farm team…I’m genuinely curious what Cull is going to roll out tonight to try and wake up this lineup because since the Christmas break, this entire team has looked collectively, completely out to lunch.

I don’t really want to do too much investigation on the Americans, because frankly I spent a while prepping for the Syracuse game only to have the team just collectively no-show. So I’ll sum it up with; the Amurks are good. They lead the North Division, have outscored the Comets 19-8 while leading their season head-to-head record with 3 wins and 1 loss so yeah they’ve pretty much crushed the Comets so far this season…so the team will collectively need to forget the Syracuse game ever happened and show up big for the home crowd!

Rightly so, Boucher, Graham and MacMaster are on the bench after their absolutely awful games last night…I think if the Comets had more healthy bodies available, there’d probably even more guys sitting out tonight.

TRANSACTIONS

Thank Gaud, Gaudsplan will be returning to the Comets lineup. A MUCH needed boost to the teams center depth…he won’t be here until the New Year but this is a welcome relief to the Comets.

With Gaudsplan’s return to the Comets, the team released Tony Cameranesi from his PTO…while he was serviceable at times, he also had many bad games that probably would have gotten him benched in any other scenario had the team not been THAT in need for centermen for the entire 2018 stretch of the season.

RE: INJURY REPORT

Coming off the bench for the first time this season in game 36 fittingly, is #36 Wacey Hamilton, who had been sidelined with a concussion since pre-season this year. Hamilton was signed to a year contract after achieving a career high # of points with the Comets (22 in 45 games)…yeah…I know…

Also coming off the bench is Jonah Gadjovich who had missed several possible games with an ankle injury off a block attempt…I’ve yet to see Wacey Hamilton play this season, but given how poorly Bancks has looked, I have major reservations about seeing Gadjovich on a line with a guy coming off THAT big of a layoff and the offensive black hole that is Carter Bancks…

1st period

Comets in Blue

Score at the end of the first period: 2-1 Comets

Well this certainly was infinitely better than last games first period! Team had better passing on the powerplay and just in general looked more cohesive out there. Despite being outshot 12 to 9, it genuinely felt like the Comets had more meaningful possession, and that’s even with the first penalty kill and the 4-on-3 PK that let in a goal. Still a promising start from the boys…

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 2-1 Comets

No scoring, but it was a pretty dominant period from the Comets, 3 powerplays, albeit unsuccessful ones; outshot the Amurks 15 to 9 and generally were really good along the boards to maintain their own possession as well as mucking up a lot of the Amurks zone-exit attempts with well-placed sticks. Props to Lind and Gadjovich in that department, as they’ve been very noticeable in that department for the team so far tonight.

Takeaways

  • Well this was an impressive effort, particularly from guys like, Wacey Hamilton, Jonah Gadjovich, Kole Lind, Jonathan Dahlen and Darren Archibald. The team played like they had something to prove and the scoreline reflected their efforts tonight. Their aggressive forechecking from the 3rd and 4th lines opened up a lot of scoring opportunities, and their work along the boards is absolutely topnotch; tonight was a heavily favored towards the Comets for possession , they were maintaining the offensive zone super well, and rarely got caught in their own for extended periods of time.
  • Jonathan Dahlen certainly looked more together tonight than he had the previous couple games. I think some of the line shakeups after Friday night’s game may have done wonders, because the teams passing looked completely different on the powerplay than it had since the return from the Christmas break.
  • Props to Wacey Hamilton who despite being out the majority of this season with a concussion, didn’t look out of shape, or late to the puck or anything tonight, they guy played lights out, and had some serious chemistry going with Bancks and Gadjovich right from the get go.
  • I wonder if someone from the team reads the Farmies because this was the most physical the team has played I think all year…lots of hard hits when finishing their checks, physically aggressive along the boards and on their checks, again, I’m not just blowing smoke, but it was literally like watching a completely different team tonight compared to the team that played against Binghamton and Syracuse during this triple header.

Comets Three Stars

  1. Jonathan Dahlen for getting a goal, 5 shots, really crisp passing tonight on the powerplay
  2. Wacey Hamilton for being a difference maker despite a huge layoff for a brutal concussion and showing great chemistry with Jonah Gadjovich that appears like it could be a staple line that isn’t worth breaking up.
  3. Darren Archibald for his 2nd ridiculous goal of the season, 8 shots total, and generally having some really solid centering passes tonight that lead to some prime scoring opportunities for the team…again totally different player tonight than the past 3 games. Will that carry over to the New Year though? Who knows…

What’s Next?

The Comets return next year on Wednesday January 2nd to face off AGAIN against the Syracuse Crunch. *insert comical cartoonish gulp gif*. The last meeting as we all know went as badly as any game of hockey could possibly go…so legitimately I have no clue what kind of tweaks the team will make to prep themselves for the Crunch…obviously they wont be starting Ivan Kulbakov that’s for sure… Kubby will probably be saved for the back-to-back next Saturday/Sunday when the team visits the Cleveland Monsters.

As always I Hope you guys enjoyed this last edition of the Farmies for 2018! Any feedback, improvement suggestions, content or highlights you’d like me to focus/pick out during games, let me know and I’ll do my best to provide during the next Farmies!

12/28/18 – Utica Comets vs. Syracuse Crunch

It’s a busy, BUSY weekend for the Farm this weekend folks; The Comets return to action for their 2nd of a triple header this weekend facing off against the Tampa Bay Lightning’s farmteam the Syracuse Crunch! The Crunch are riding hot on a 3 game win streak, wheras the Comets are coming off their first back-to-back losses since mid-November. The physicality of Binghamton really took its toll on the team; splitting the December series against the Devils 2-2, where the Comets just got absolutely battered, with serious injuries coming to Jonathan Dahlen and Ashton Sautner, and minor ones to Jamie Sifers and Dylan Blujus.

Despite all those aforementioned injuries, the Comets persevered and have managed to go 7-3-1-0 through the month of December; with the Comets picking up their most impressive victories to date against the league leading Charlotte Checkers while missing practically the majority of their core players. Comets are 8-4-0-1 coming off a loss this season, and I’m sure looking ahead to their 3rd game in 3 nights, they won’t want to go into their final home game of the year on 3 straight losses. With that little pre-amble out of the way let’s get into tonight’s lineup where it appears Cull has shaken things up a bit in lieu of facing a much less “old-school” style of hockey, team.

Starting Lineup

Jasek Kero Boucher
Dahlen Gaunce Archibald
MacMaster Darcy MacEwen
Arseneau Bancks Lind
LD RD
Brisebois McEneny

Benched

RE: Benchings

Due to the nature of the triple-header, Demko sits to avoid 7 straight starts, so Ivan Kulbakov gets the start tonight…Hopefully he’s worked on his glove side since he was last seen in net for the Comets! Rightly so, Jagger Dirk gets slotted back in alongside Dylan Blujus while Saucerman sits…Saucerman still is very competent as a defenseman, but Dirk has definitely showed more promise on Blujus side. It’s a good problem to have when your two ECHL call-ups can BOTH slot in and be effective contributors to the team.

RE: INJURY REPORT

Still the same old injuries; Gadjovich apparently IS an option for the weekend game, but that remains to be seen.

1st period

Comets in White

Score at the end of the first period: 3-0 Crunch

Outshot 18 to 9…frankly I’m pretty shocked the Comets even HAD 9 shots because it felt like they were just late to the puck the entire period. There’s been some absolutely brutal officiating tonight as well; no clue how that reckless and dangerous elbow doesn’t get more than just 2 minutes? Also it really doesn’t speak well to the managements prep for this season if literally NONE of the centers can carry the puck through center and enter the zone. The only guy who CAN enter the zone is Gaunce but he seemingly only does it on a man-disadvantage, and does it through the wing as its clearly where he’s more comfortable playing. If the Comets can’t figure out a way to maintain possession while crossing into the Crunch’ offensive zone, then I do not expect this game to be remotely competitive. Also…Kulbakov…bro….your glove side man…

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 6-1

Comets outshot the Crunch 13 to 12…but it didn’t matter….Comets powerplay 0 for 5. What more can I say that doesn’t sound like a broken record at this point…Powerplay is predictable and stale… Not exactly sure WHY every Comet tonight is just taking their sweet time cherry picking their shots…JUST FUCKING ONE TIME IT. Also I can’t REALLY fault Demko on the two goals against…one was a super flukey bounce off Sifers toe, and the other was a breakaway from out of the penalty box that none of the Comets were ready for. Having no real warmup in preparation for this game and having played last night, I’m sure he’s just in an “oh well” state right now. Going to be another long 20 minutes unfortunately.

Takeaways

  • absolutely forgettable night of play for the Comets
  • the team needs a shooting coach or something, the number of shots that sailed wide of the net was fucking ridiculous. Outshot 41 to 33, but I bet it’d be a bit more even if the Comets could collectively wire a one-timer on the net.
  • I’m going to take the blame for tonights huge loss, as I jinxed Kulbakov by hoping his glove side kinks had been worked out. I think 5 of the shots tonight were gloveside, 2 were shots across his crease that he was late getting to, one a screened wrister over his blocker side, and the other 2 were close over his blocker side. So oops..my bad Kuby my bad!
  • spectacularly bad night from our forwards…outside of Darcy and Lind, they were all collectively invisible. Dahlen while he had some nice passes, blew a golden opportunity to try and close the gap and whiffed badly…MacEwen was struggling tonight to get anything going with his linemates. MacMaster had a brutal game, bunch of turnovers and bad passes, sailed every shot wide of the goal…not really sure what the team expects from him at this point. Jasek Kero and Boucher collectively couldn’t maintain any possession in the Crunch’ zone long enough to get offense generated. Archibald and Gaunce had many decent drives but looked tired nearly every time. Lind and Arseneau continue to have pretty decent chemistry when paired alongside Cam Darcy.
  • The defense tonight was just atrocious though, so many bad pinches, or shots that sailed so far wide of the net only to ricochet around the boards to give the Crunch a breakaway opportunity. Sifers in particular had a rough night, as did Jesse Graham who got outmuscled in a lot of key battles tonight…I like his speed and offensive game, but if you can’t muscle anyone off the puck when that’s how they beat you on every play, it isn’t going to go well…speaking of can’t outmuscle anyone…anyone wondering about Brisebois up with the Canucks should rewatch this game…absolutely invisible offensively and defensively…I call him Breezebois because whenever he goes to hit anybody or outmuscle anybody, it’s like a light breeze…he just has no strength.

Comets Three Stars

  1. Jagger Dirk and Dylan Blujus for somehow ending the game with a +/- of 0
  2. Joe Roberts on the mic for not calling it a night after the second period and going home early
  3. Kole Lind for trying even when it was legitimately pointless to spend the effort to try and score

What’s Next?

Sigh…the Comets are back at it again tomorrow night against the North Divisions’ leader, the Rochester Americans. I’m sure that, coming off 3 straight losses, and a record setting embarrassment against the Crunch tonight, the Comets will surely show some kind of spark or fire in their final game of 2018 to give the home crowd something to be hopeful for in the new year!…lord knows the boys need it.

Fix the powerplay,

and oh yeah

Fuck Messier.

Whats up everybody, hope Santa spoiled you all, and if he cheaped out then I hope you were able to get something for yourself! You’ve all earned it! The next couple weeks or so the Farmies is going to be on a pretty tough track, with both the NHL AND World Juniors happening at the same time…so I’m going to link up the last edition I did right below, because I thought it was a fantastic statement game for Zack MacEwen, to make his pitch to be a call-up to the Canucks and a really interesting Farmies to see just what that guy is capable of.

Tonight the Comets faceoff against the Binghamton Devils for the third time in a row! With their loss last Saturday, the Comets dropped to 3rd in the North Division. Last game the team struggled hard in the opening two periods to generate consistent possession numbers, tonight after some rest and relaxation, I’d hope the Comets will have worked out those kinks, and will look to start this insane, 3 game in 3 night stretch to close out 2018!

Eric Tangradi is NOT in tonight’s lineup for the Devils, so in theory, NO ONE should be going down with horrific assault injuries. So lets get into tonight’s lineup!

1st period

Comets in Blue

Score at the end of the first period: 0-0 Tie

Dominant first period from the Comets even if they didn’t score…2 powerplays, 15 shots to the Devils 5…if I had access to possession numbers, I’m sure it would be like 70/30 in favor of the Comets. Liked what I saw from the lines; I didn’t expect much from a Lind, Cameranesi, MacMaster line, but they’ve looked pretty decent when used! All in all, a really solid period of play from Blujus, Graham and Jasek!

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 0-0 Tie

A slow burn of a period…only 8 shots between the two teams until the extended Devils powerplay where they extended their shot differential 8 to 4. A patience testing period as the Comets really got nothing going with any of their zone entries but still managed to hold possession for the bulk of the period…that final penalty kill though will have exhausted some of their players pretty hard though…they REALLY need to shore up their offense in the third if they want to try and put this game away.

3rd Period

Final Score: 1-0 Devils

Despite outshooting the Devils 33 to 18 across three periods, the Comets just couldn’t get anything substantial offensively against Cam Johnson. Physically, the Devils just dominated the Comets, at least 50% of the Comets zone-entry attempts ended with the Coments player sandwiched against the boards while another Devil cleared it…rinse and repeat for 60 minutes and the Devils eke out a victory despite getting badly out possessed.

Takeaways

  • Comets powerplay was once again completely abysmal against the AHL’s WORST penalty killing team… The team has scored only 4 times in their last 34 powerplays…Time to change it up, because it isn’t working, you can only roll out 5 left hand shots with one right hand shot (Boucher) and expect your opponent to not see the one-timer setup to Boucher coming. Its so telegraphed, no wonder the Devils had no problem against the Comets tonight as their coaches know who to physically shutdown in order to succeed
  • The Blueline was the only effective thing about the Comets tonight
    D # of Shots
    McEneny 2
    Blujus 3
    Saucerman 3
    Brisebois 2
    Graham 1

  • Jasek, Kero, MacMaster, MacEwen, Lind and Dahlen were held to 0 shots….with any shot attempts made, being blocked or deflected wide from the goal… MacMaster had a golden opportunity down the wing but literally dropped his stick, or had it slip from his hands…whichever it was it was not a compelling argument to continue playing him at this capacity, because he’s simply looked out of his depth when it comes to generating offense for the team
  • The Devils were particularily VERY physical with Jasek tonight, I think the coaching staff knew that Jasek is this teams unsung hero, a brilliant playmaker and passer that if shutdown, pretty much blows up that lines ability to create meaningful offense.
  • Despite Darcy’s one takeaway, I felt he was pretty invisible tonight, Bancks as well. Dahlen is pretty much wasted playing with these two as neither are strong enough to battle along the boards to retrieve the puck, nor fast enough on a zone-entry to get anything collectively going.
  • Would like to see Dahlen slot back in with Gaunce and MacEwen. Archibald is back to phoning it in if a period isn’t going his way. Get someone with MacEwen who can take a pass and MAKE a pass instead of taking the selfish play 90% of the time.
  • Please fix the powerplay…

Comets Three Stars

  1. Jesse Graham
  2. Dylan Blujus
  3. Colton Saucerman

Honorable Mention: same as last game, Evan McEneny, who after having his last season wrecked by a leg injury, is making a decent campaign for himself as being a reliable call-up for the Canucks blue-line. Solid back-checking, very rarely takes bad penalties, can PK and is solid on the powerplay as well.

What’s Next?

The Comets are back at it again tomorrow night against the Syracuse Crunch, and then AGAIN on Saturday against the Division leading Rochester Americans. First and foremost though, the Syracuse Crunch are second in the North Division with least games played, and will be coming in tomorrow night’s game on a 3 game win streak. The Comets need to shore up their offense if they want to even have a chance to win this one.

For now! this has been it for tonight’s Farmies, but I’ll be back again tomorrow! As always I Hope you guys enjoyed this edition of the Farmies, any feedback, improvement suggestions, content or highlights you’d like me to focus/pick out during games, let me know and I’ll do my best to provide during the next Farmies!

12/22/18 – Utica Comets vs. Binghamton Devils

Evening folks welcome to the last Farmies edition before the Christmas break! Coming into tonight’s game at home, the Comets are riding a 7 game point streak; in their last 14 games they are 10-3-1-0 which is incredibly impressive given the shocking number of long-term injuries shaking up their d-core. Their opponent tonight, a familiar one, the Binghamton Devils, have won 3 of its last 5, and are 4-6-0-0 in their last 10 games but have lost 4 of their last 5 road games, a staggering 4-10-2-0 on the road…so the odds are in the Comets favor tonight as they look to go into the Christmas break on a high note!

Last nights game against Springfield saw the Comets lose Richard Bachman to injury, and is out indefinitely. He went down after getting clipped in the back of the leg, and appeared to be unable to put any weight or pressure on his leg as he was helped off the ice by his teammates. Joining the ranks of the Comets “all-name team” is PTO goalie Devin Buffalo from the Adirondack Phantoms… the Comets had to call up Buffalo as the Farms Farm the Kalamazoo Wings were last playing Fort Wayne and thus replacement goaltender Ivan Kulbakov could not make it to Utica in time for tonights game.

Returning tonight is Jonathan Dahlen, who had been out with a concussion, after a December 14th game against, who’d have guessed it, the FUCKING Binghamton Devils. The addition of Dahlen back into the lineup will provide some much needed powerplay dynamics as the Comets have struggled as of late with the man advantage…going 0/5 against Springfield and 0/3 TWICE against Charlotte. So here’s hoping the addition of Dahlen back into the lineup see’s a boost to their PP unit. With that lets get into tonight’s game!

1st period

Comets in their Green/White alternates

Score at the end of the first period: 1-1 Tie

Comets with a pretty decent period, team looks WAY better WITH Dahlen in the lineup; going into the second period with about a minute left on the powerplay COULD lead to a goal, but its pretty amazing how bad their powerplay has been as of late. Really unlucky goal against for Demko too; just a weak shift from Cameranesi there in general that caused that goal. Hope that one doesn’t come back to bite them in the ass.

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 3-2 Devils

Utica heavily out possessed in this period, and the shots reflect it, getting outshot 10 to 6 across the period…once again bad discipline costs them as they take 3 penalties. Team REALLY needs to get some better shots on net, the chances for them are just so few and far between this game…can’t win off 6 shots a period.

3rd Period

Final Score: 4-3 Devils

Well the Comets outshot the Devils cleanly in the third period, but it just wasn’t enough. Not enough high quality scoring chances, abysmal powerplay continues and Demko has quite possibly his worst game I’ve seen out of him in quite some time, poor rebound control cost them two goals tonight and was the difference maker.

Takeaways

  • Comets powerplay was 2/6 tonight, against the league’s WORST PENALTY KILLING TEAM…that simply isn’t good enough. Cull shortens his bench like fucking crazy on the powerplay and penalty kill, the guy has got to try trusting other players into his special teams, get Lind out there, the kid has great passing, trust him to know what to do…you can’t roll out Tanner Kero and Reid Boucher for both your penalty kill AND powerplay 1st units and expect them to have enough gas to provide even strength scoring
  • I URGE everyone to watch that fucking back checking highlight of MacEwen’s where he outraces everyone on the ice to deny the Devils any possession off a zone entry. That was at the END of a long shift…and then again watch that final highlight of the Farmies…I’m not joking…I rewound until I found the start of MacEwens final shift of the game…he was on the ice for the last 2 minutes and 50 seconds of gameplay…and HE STILL HAS THE FUCKING ENERGY TO ATTEMPT THAT SOLO DRIVE THROUGH THE DEVILS PLAYERS TO TRY EVEN THE GAME…the guy is a fucking animal…give him a decent chance with the Canucks at some point…I feel like MacEwen is the embodiment of everything they wanted Tim Schaller to be… call him up…don’t call up Gaunce or Archibald, get this kid up to the big leagues…because the kid is a fucking animal every shift…speed, size, skating, puckhandling, shots, effort, speed, hustle, powerplay, penalty killing, speed net front presence, wristers/slappers, did I mention SPEED? The guy does literally everything for this team and is fucking GOOD at it.
  • Demko had an uncharacteristically bad night. Tony Cameranesi single handedly caused two goals against. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that 2 of the goals tonight were completely on Demko’s lack of rebound control on specifically his pad saves. I don’t imagine this is something he would repeat in the future, and I’d expect more discipline from him later in that regards, but this might be the one time where his forwards were left trying to bail out their goalie than the reverse which is a first in a long time.
  • Archibald really does seem completely checked out…I know he’s riding a pretty good goal streak, but man does the guy just not put any effort on back checking or anything…
  • Trent Cull said after the game that a lot of the goals against were due to plays from youth and inexperience…I legit was baffled by this; the first two goals were legitimately due to errors from Tony Cameranesi, and then the last two goals were BOTH off poor rebound and puck control from Thatcher Demko. Unless he groups Cameranesi and Demko into the youth and inexperience crowd, despite Demkos 103 pro starts and Cameranesi’s 164 pro games? Either way maybe its just a handling the press thing, but I’d hope they addressed that the goals against were caused by easy to fix errors and aren’t just a blanket “it’s the rookies problem” bullshit.

Comets Three Stars

  1. Zack MacEwen – the offensive side
  2. Zack MacEwen – the defensive side
  3. Reid Boucher – 8 shots and a goal and an assist

Honorable Mention: I feel like I don’t clip enough of him, but Evan McEneny(#2) has been so incredibly solid on the Comets blueline in the absence of Sautner/Juolevi and Chatfield. He has easily the best passing game out of any of the current Comets blue liners and quite rarely makes any notable gaffes. Since Sautner went down he has easily been the Comets best defenceman.

What’s Next?

The Comets get a much needed layoff for the holidays and return next Thursday against the Binghamton Devils again. The time off will be welcome as a serious lack of discipline the past couple games has run Cull’s special teams to a level of exhaustion I’ve not yet seen this season. With the loss tonight, the Comets drop to 3rd in the North Division, just 1 point shy of the Cleveland Monsters, who have 36 points with 3 games in hand.

Until the 27th, the Farmies bids everyone adieu and wishes you a merry Christmas and a happy holidays. I Hope you guys enjoyed this edition of the Farmies, any feedback, improvement suggestions, content or highlights you’d like me to focus/pick out during games, let me know and I’ll do my best to provide during the next Farmies!

12/21/18 – Utica Comets vs. Springfield Thunderbirds

Ayyyyyyyyy its Friday, last day of work until next Thursday so I can’t wait to crank out this Farmies, because we got a weekend of good hockey coming up for the Canucks and the Comets, where the teams face Winnipeg and Binghamton respectively.

Anyways I want to cut to the chase and say I hope the Comets just annihilate this team of bloody goons disguised as an AHL team called the Springfield Thunderbirds. Last time they played we got some of the trashiest shit I think I’ve ever seen in hockey. Example 1example 2example 3 … yah… safe to say I’m no fan of this team…anyways lets get into it because like myself I’m sure everyone is under the Xmas time-crunch and don’t have that much time on their hands as the clock ticks by until the 25th so LETS. GET. INTO. IT!

RE: Benchings

Saucerman is on the bench again, makes sense, Dirk has been playing pretty solidly the past couple games…with Juolevi out for the season, and apparently Chatfield now out for “a few more months” there’s definitely room for him to slide in should Dirk fall-off, or should ANOTHER injury befall this tattered Comets blue line.

RE: INJURY REPORT

Apparently Wacey Hamilton practice for the first time in months with the Comets in a no-contact jersey, apparently he looks to return pretty soon, but given how solid the team has looked without him, I wonder if he finds a place to slot in, or will Trent Cull just defer to Hamilton’s experience and just bench Cameranesi despite his serviceable gameplay?

Dahlen still remains out with a concussion…no word on a timetable for his return

1st period

Comets in Blue

Score at the end of the first period: 1-0 Comets

Despite a pretty rough start where the Comets were being outshot 7 to 1. They turn it around and end up leading 15-12 in shots against the T-Birds and open up scoring as well. Really irritates me that Hunt didn’t get an instigator penalty on top of his two cross-checking penalties…. *heaviest of east coast Canadian accents* THAT GUY’S JUST A FACKIN’ GOON DATS FUR CHUR!”

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 2-0 Comets

Shots were even this period, 9-9. Comets powerplay has struggled hard tonight, going 0-4 on the night. Springfield doing a good job to keep the puck away from Zack MacEwen all night and have done well to stifle his offense; Reid Boucher looking real dangerous most shifts too, should be on the board but Springfield’s goalie is bailing them out hard.

3rd Period

Final Score: 2-1 Comets

Wasn’t too much clippable content from tonight’s game…Comets were hemmed in their own zone for a majority of the first and third periods…in the third period specifically the comets got outshot 17 to 5. When Demko subbed in for Bachman, with 10 minutes and change remaining in the period, he ended up facing 11 shots. Across the game, Utica was outshot 38 to 29, and boy did it feel like the Comets were just getting nothing of note with their shots on net.

Takeaways

  • Bit of a weird one tonight, team looked drained coming into the first period, and in the third they just had nothing left in the tank. Having to kill 7 penalties, and running 5 full powerplays I guess exhausts your top lines when guys like Boucher and Kero are used in BOTH special teams first units, but man it was just a huge difference in gameplay from tonight compared to the games against Charlotte. I wonder if burnout is starting to factor in due to the burden being put on the special teams now that a majority of their top end talent is out with injury?
  • I’m pretty bummed for Bachman; he was absolutely lights out tonight. I wish he didn’t get injured and was able to secure the shutout because man he made this game winnable for the Comets, if it wasn’t for his several clutch saves this is probably a blowout from Springfield because they were all over the Comets tonight.
  • Once again Brendan Gaunce notches himself a couple penalty kill breakaways where one leads to a goal…I wonder if this year was going to be HIS year in the NHL and he was finally going to make that leap…because the guy I’m watching right now in the AHL feels like a completely different player to what I’ve seen with the Canucks. I wouldn’t be terribly opposed to him being called up if he could show the kind of aggression and offensive instincts he’s shown since returning to the Comets lineup this season.
  • Bit of a quiet night for guys like Lind, Gadjovich and Jasek, not to say they didn’t play poorly or anything, but it looks like the team collectively had an off night, bailed out by goaltending so I wouldn’t put any stock into it. I think those efforts in Charlotte REALLY took a lot out of them.
  • During tonights game I realized how little the Comets hit. They are really NOT a physical team. That isn’t to say they dont finish their checks or anything, but compared to a team like Springfield it just seems like the Comets are very anti-hitting and more of a playmaking squad who want to beat you with skill rather than toughness…which is fine…but again there were some hits tonight where I think there SHOULD have been some kickback/pushback but just didnt get any…

Comets Three Stars

  1. Richard Bachman
  2. Brendan Gaunce
  3. Darren Archibald

What’s Next?

The Comets, inch themselves a bit closer to that 1st place spot in the North Division of the AHL; 3 points shy of the first place Rochester Americans who lead the division with 3 less games played than the Comets. The Comets find themselves on a pretty solid streak here though; 7w-1L-1otl in December, with 4 of those wins and the overtime loss coming on the road. I feel like if the team can shore up their discipline (lot of hooking and tripping penalties) and give their special teams guys a bit of a break from that end, and with Demko playing like a monster, and Bachman providing solid backup games like tonight, this team could make a run for the Calder Cup, but I don’t think they can be having too many of these offnights where they get outshot 17-5 in the third period of a 1 goal game.

Next up the Comets face the Binghamton Devils on Saturday, right now the Comets have split their series against the Devils 2-2; most recently winning 5-2 and 7-4 in the month of December…with the Devils main goalie Mackenzie Blackwood called up to the big team, they’ll be relying on Cam Johnson who will be starting his 4th game straight. In theory this should be a winnable game for the Comets; at home, against an ECHL goalie, with the bulk of their core healthy and producing as of late. Now that I’ve said that though, I expect the Comets to lose 17-2 in a game where they are outshot 68-13

Hope you guys enjoyed this edition of the Farmies, any feedback, improvement suggestions, content or highlights you’d like me to focus/pick out during games, let me know and I’ll do my best to provide during the next Farmies!

12/18/18 – Utica Comets vs. Charlotte Checkers

It’s a glorious Tuesday everyone! I had a miserable day at work, treading water to try and make sure everything got done on time, that was until I got word that Cull was gonna ride the hot hand and Thatcher Mother-Fucking Demko was going to be starting in net for the Comets tonight in Charlotte! The more I thought about it, the more I was impressed as fuck by the Comets overtime loss on Sunday; the team was without two of its top goal scorers in Zack MacEwen who was suspended for 1 game for …something…and Jonathan Dahlen who finds himself out of the lineup tonight with a lingering concussion

Nonetheless, last Sunday it was an incredible performance by Thatcher Demko that brought the Comets to overtime against the far-and-away number 1 team in the AHL. Tonight we’ll see if we can get some points, not just from Demko standing on his head, but with Zack MacEwen returning to the lineup to fill that 5v5 scoring void. Reid Boucher was boxed out Sunday by the impeccable Charlotte defense, registering just 1 shot, outside of his usual 7/per night, and rookie Kole Lind was just on the wrong side of an incredible number of bad bounces as he still looks to sink his first of the season. If Demko can turn in another repeat of Sundays performance, coupled with Lukas Jasek and Zack MacEwen’s ever steady presence on the front lines, this might be a bit more competitive of a game!

RE: Benchings

Surprised to see Colton Saucerman come out of the lineup, he’s been quite serviceable for the team in all areas…would have expected Jesse Graham to come out, who despite his speed, is constantly outmuscled on the play if he can’t flat-out beat his man in a footrace. Also sitting is Tanner MacMaster who as I said in the last Farmies, was having a ROUGH game. The MacMaster benching opens the door for Jonah Gadjovich to get a better look, as his line with Arseneau and Cameranesi was one of the more effective lines against Charlotte on Sunday.

RE: INJURY REPORT

Jamie Sifers returns to tonights lineup; Jonathan Dahlen is still out with concussion…Dahlen DID go to the Carolina Panthers home game, which you’d think would be an awful idea for someone dealing with a concussion, but I suppose his recovery is coming along a lot faster than we think!

The worst news of all came in the first 5 minutes of the first period, where Olli Juolevi was declared to have gone for full knee surgery, BUT is expected to be ready in time for training camp.

Honestly the optics of this aren’t great. Juolevi was racking up points on the powerplay, but his defensive game still made it a sure thing that he wasn’t cracking the NHL roster anytime soon. With guys like Quinn Hughes, Jett Woo, Jack Rathbone and fellow Comets Jalen Chatfield breaking out this year and looking to make the move up next season, Juolevi could see himself fall off the proverbial depth chart cliff if he doesn’t have a successful training camp. Fingers crossed for him cause holy moly the expectations of him keep getting higher with every point Matthew Tkachuk gets…. Anyone saying the B word should still temper their reactions a bit, he was till tracking to have a successful first season in the AHL with potential to improve his defensive game…but boy it gets harder each year to not have that word float through your head when you think of the what-ifs.

1st period

Comets in Blue

Score at the end of the first period: 1-0 Comets

Another impressive period from the Comets against the league’s best team; Utica outshot Charlotte badly in the first 13 to 5 , were 1/2 on the powerplay and killed off an early penalty. Really good stuff from special teams so far; the takeaways all across the roster is really helping this team out too; lot of o-zone time earned off of clutch takeaways by Comets players.

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 2-2 Tie

Comets give up the two goal lead off some pretty weak defending. I will say despite the weak defending the Comets STILL looked solid, the Checkers absolutely peppered Demko with shots, 19 to 8 in favor of the Checkers. Comets are still finding key takeaways, but kind of like Sundays game, they seem to be losing steam or traction in the ability to generate legit scoring plays.

3rd Period

Score at the end of the third period: 3-3 tie

For the second time in 2 games, the Comets are going to overtime against the Charlotte Checkers! Some soft ass penalty calls during regulation, but the Comets struck when they needed to! That clutch save from Demko is the reason they are getting the extra point tonight holy moly. I can’t even get over the Jasek pass to Boucher either…such a good pass. Now let’s see if the Comets can correct their mistakes from Sundays game and make it two points here in overtime!

Overtime

FINAL SCORE: 4-3 Comets

Comets manage the comeback in overtime and earn 3 out of a possible 4 points against the best team in the AHL. This was a really gritty performance from the farm on this one; just a ton of nothing going their way constantly throughout the game, but they persevered and capitalized on Charlottes errors which were few and far between.

Takeaways

  • The 2 game stint against Charlotte was great for the team, excellent penalty killing, didn’t get drawn into cheap or dirty gameplay or every become undisciplined…straight up tonight they were just getting the softest calls against them, legit nothing they could’ve done.
  • Kole Lind is trying man, give the kid credit, he’s constantly trying to score his first AHL goal, but oh boy the Checkers defense is just so good. I think he could do a lot better for himself if he started trying to draw penalty’s, because the kid is constantly finding himself alone on breakaways, but his penchant to take his time and be patient doesn’t cut it in the AHL when everyone else is as fast, or faster than you…kids just gotta move his feet and make the firm decision to shoot…stop the fancy feet, and toe drag stuff kid and just fuckin wire it.
  • I’m pretty impressed to be honest….this current defensive core is doing absolutely fine without Juolevi and Chatfield… it’s probably not a good sign that Juolevi being out of the lineup has had little to no ipmact on the game results for the team. Thatcher Demko being injured, THAT was a game changer, but this defensive core is actually kind of working…Jagger Dirk had a pretty solid game tonight, he had one play where he had the puck go by him, but his D partner retrieved it before Charlotte could get a scoring opportunity, so all things considered, with Chatfield, Juolevi AND Sautner out, they’re doing quite well together. Brisebois is still a total coin-flip when it comes to his passing/playmaking but he’s holding it down for now.

Comets Three Stars

  1. Kole Lind – see above
  2. Brendan Gaunce – man I wish this guy showed what he can do in the AHL at the NHL level…he plays so safe whenever he’s in Vancouver, but on the Comets the guy plays super aggressive, lots of speed, aggressive forechecking and is a great playmaker…I legitimately don’t know what happens to that guy when he gets called up.
  3. Thatcher Demko – he was beat a couple times tonight, but one of those was super unlucky, had another highlight clutch save tonight to give Utica a chance at the last second comeback and his team pulled through to get it for him…stopped 33 of 36 shots.

Honorable Mention – Reid Boucher, who despite being held to 1 shot on Sundays game, managed to elude the Charlotte defense on many occasions tonight to try and put his team on the board; as he led the team with 6 shots on the night, and scored when it mattered most.

Honorable Honorable Mention – Lukas Jasek, just such a solid well rounded game, he along with Zack MacEwen are like sure-fire things for call-ups. I think due to Archibald’s contract, he’s probably more likely to get the call-up, but man MacEwen and Jasek just look so good every game. Any mistake they do make, they usually make up for on that very same shift. With Chatfield, Juolevi and Palmu out, these two guys have really thrown gas on the Farmies flame, I feel like I could make a Farmies just of their shifts cause they usually have something noteworthy every time they step on the ice.

What’s Next?

The Comets, now sitting 2nd in the North division are back in action Friday night as they visit the Springfield Thunderbirds…the last time the Comets faced the Thunderbirds we got this gem of wtfuckery, will be interesting to see if they keep up the bullshit cheap-shottery or if they’ll have got a disciplinary check from the league about trying to instigate fights post-game and shoving referees…but again, this is the AHL so that all doubtful, and I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of swingin’ sticks, elbows, chargings, everything under the sun that Bobby Farnham can muster up in 60 minutes. The T-Birds are 2-2-1-1 since playing the Comets while the Comets themselves have gone 4-0-1-0, earning a potential 9 of 10 points in their last 5 games, with 3 of those 4 points coming against the AHL’s number one team.

Until then, I’m off to catch up on the Canucks game!

Hope you guys enjoyed this edition of the Farmies, any feedback, improvement suggestions, content or highlights you’d like me to focus/pick out during games, let me know and I’ll do my best to provide during the next Farmies!

12/16/18 – Utica Comets vs. Charlotte Checkers

Happy Sunday everybody, instead of doing what I probably should be doing, which is, shop for everyone I know and love, I’m gonna veg out, watch some farm team action in Charlotte North Carolina, maybe try pick up some World Juniors tickets online, and then watch the Office for the rest of the day while I lament my decision to not attempt any Christmas shopping!

The Checkers have won five straight games, with their streak being extended last night against the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Comets can capitalize on what should be a tired Charlotte team who are playing less than 15 hours after their last game ended! This might prove difficult though as APPARENTLY, Zack MacEwen has been suspended for a game for a hit on Nick Lappin that led to injury. I roll my eyes at this league because somehow THAT warrants a suspension but Kurtis Gabriel hopping the boards to attack MacEwen from behind gets nothing …. Fortunately, thank god, Eric Tangradi WAS suspended for his boarding of Jonathan Dahlen that gave him a concussion….I’m assuming the fact that this was his 2nd major injury caused to a Utica Comet in less than a week played into a longer suspension, but still, 3 games is a joke for a concussion, and 1 game for breaking a dudes face is an even bigger joke.

That news in mind lets take a look at the starting lineup…with both Dahlen AND MacEwen out of the lineup, the Comets are going to have problems with 5v5 scoring so it might be a game devoid of highlights. Fingers crossed they make me eat my words!

1st period

Comets in Blue

Score at the end of the first period: 0-0 Tie

Competent first period from a team missing two of its top playmakers on the team; Really good penalty killing but also a very sub-par powerplay. I imagine it’s kind of hard to get a powerplay going when you only have one real one-timer option in Boucher on the right side, and your right side is Tanner MacMaster whose passing hasn’t quite been there today. Also I’m not certain, but I think this is the first Farmies where a first period ends with NO goals being scored. I’m too lazy to double check all my Farmies so I’m just gonna say yes….yes it is.

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 1-1 Tie

Lot of quality chances for the Comets, lots of good play set up but just no execution, or the right bounces or whatever…also MacMaster is just really putting this team at a disadvantage with the lack of discipline. Two nearly identical penalties isn’t doing his team any favors.

3rd Period

Score at the end of the third period: 1-1 tie

For the first time in a while we are going to overtime. Utica and Charlotte had an even amount of chances and shots on net, but the Comets towards the end of the 3rd looked desperate trying to get ANYTHING going offensively as Charlotte was just all over their sticks, trying to disrupt any prime shooting attempts.

Overtime

  • GOAL – CHARLOTTE – 2-1 Checkers: The Comets break-in attempt gets denied by Roland McKeown, who’s tip gets to Aleksi Saarela ends up in the back of Demko’s net as Saarela goes 5-hole to end it quick in OT.

FINAL SCORE: 2-1 Checkers

Takeaways

  • This was a tough game for Utica against Charlotte who prove why they are the best team in the AHL right now. Super sound defensively with clutch goaltending…nearly every one of Utica’s shots on net had a Checker’s stick touch the puck after release, they truly don’t make it easy on forwards to get offense going
  • Tanner MacMaster had a rough game, between having no scoring luck, he was 0/4 on shot attempts and picked up two very undisciplined penalties. One which ruined a Comets powerplay, and the other which seemed to give Charlotte some serious momentum and led to an eventual goal on his next shift. He’s going to have to pick up his game in the wake of Dahlen’s absence if Cull is going to continue to slot him on the 2nd line.
  • Besides his hand pass gaffe; Jasek continues to prove why he’s one of the teams more dangerous wingers every night, a low-key quality playmaker. Unfortunately the team collectively was having no luck hitting the net. Hopefully Cull see’s past the hand-pass and doesn’t pull any punishment benching bullshit with him
  • Reid Boucher picked up his second pointless game of the season as he was surprisingly VERY quiet tonight…only 1 registered shot on net; he did pick up some penalty kill time which I thought was surprising cause he isn’t exactly renowned for his quick defensive play
  • Despite a lot of scoring opportunities he created, Archie had so many blunders tonight, the near assist on a charlotte goal in his own end, constantly late to the play while defending, I can’t tell if he’s exhausted or what, but this game and last game he’s just looked so lethargic on certain shifts

Comets Three Stars

  1. Thatcher Demko – see last editions Farmies for reasons why Thatcher is number 1. 27/29 shots saved plus a penalty shot save as well. Team left him hanging on the game-tying goal as they left the much smaller Jesse Graham to hold off to Checkers players on Demkos left side, and for the first time ever since I’ve started watching him play, he let in a softie in overtime; which is pretty astonishing given how many shots he’s faced since returning to the lineup.
  2. Jonah Gadjovich – sure his skating still isn’t the best, but the guy does play with hustle every shift, he was aggressive along the boards and on the forecheck, and didn’t look SO out of place on the backcheck either, so yah his skating could use work but so could Brock Boeser’s…his game is coming along with every game he cracks the lineup, I hope his solid play tonight earned him a slot on Tuesday. 3 shots on goal plus some really nice passes to his blue-liners for one-timers tonight, seems to be a staple of his gameplay as I’ve seen him do it multiple times in his games.
  3. Kole Lind – dude wanted to score badly tonight, like REALLY fucking badly…some of his one-timer attempts were way off, so the guy needs to work on his accuracy, but he was trying and despite SOME positioning errors, he was generally at the right place at the right time tonight, just this Charlotte team man is so fucking good…like clearly a really defensively sound team, so being able to bring them to overtime is an accomplishment for a team missing so many key pieces of their lineup. Considering when they HAD their FULL lineup they were losing in regulation by 1 or 2 goals…so this was a good one from the Comets

What’s Next?

The Comets are back in action Tuesday night as they run it back against Charlotte. With Zack MacEwen returning to the lineup, the Comets add some much needed 5v5 pressure. Whether Dahlen comes back is a total mystery, the longer he takes the better though, I don’t want guys rushing concussion recoveries to play AHL hockey…no thank you…too many goons. I really hope Cull rides the hot hand and keeps Demko in net, the guy kept them in this one, and apparently Bachman is a carrer 0-4 vs. the Checkers, so maybe play it safe and ride the wave of Demko’s stellar play.

Hope you guys enjoyed this edition of the Farmies, any feedback, improvement suggestions, content or highlights you’d like me to focus/pick out during games, let me know and I’ll do my best to provide during the next Farmies!

12/14/18 – Utica Comets vs. Binghamton Devils

Well guys, I’ve peaked…the Farmies was namedropped in Wyatt Arndt’s latest Athletic article where he highlights some of my comments about Petrus Palmu’s return to TPS for the remainder of the season…there’s no reason to continue doing these anymore because as I said, I’ve peaked, my work’s been mentioned in a subscription based sports journalism website…I have to quit while I’m ahead before its too late.

Also I’m now seeing in the article I spelled “NO” as “KNOW” so all of his subscribers are probably wondering why he’s quoting some moron with 3rd grade spelling literacy. But ANYWAYS

Thanks Stanchion for the shoutout! I’m glad what I’m doing here is reaching the Canucks community in many ways and is a constant reminder of why I enjoy writing in my past time!

To be completely honest I don’t really want to get into the whole Palmu going to TPS thing because I might end up rambling harder than I did about the Carcone trade, which I hope everyone who checks up on these, forgets about :D. So I’ll try to keep my opinion SHORT.

The bottom line is, Petrus Palmu was barely being played, and when he was being played he was being deployed in a 4th line grinder, defensive zone start “Schaller/Sutter/Granlund-esque” type of role, which straight up was never why he was drafted. The guy was a speedy skilled winger capable of driving offense from the wings as he used his low center of gravity to protect the puck and create great looking scoring opportunities with crisp passing. I urge anyone who reads this to second-guess everything Johnson and Cull say about Palmu struggling to adapt to the North American game because that is simply complete bullshit. He was struggling to adapt to a style of play that never earned him success or the rookie of the year title in Liiga, when he was on the powerplay in that ONE game, he looked awesome, crisp passes, creating numerous chances. Its why I struggle listening to Utica media shill out the same shit Johnson and Cull spew like its gospel…anyone with eyes could see that Palmu was hustling every shift he had…the fact that the management thought his inability to “play the boards”as a 5’6” speedy winger was one of the reasons he struggled to adapt is just nonsense. He played his heart out every shift, and when he did retrieve the puck and do what they expected of him, they still fucking benched him for guys like Reid Gardiner and Alex Kile, so shut up about the compete level bullshit guys, I see through it, anyone with a brain can see through it. To quote a fellow R/Canucks user, they were trying to drive a square peg in a round hole, and when it didn’t fit they blamed the peg not the hammer swinging down.

Personally, I have this feeling that Palmu is going to return to TPS, a team he had wonderful success with, play with a stellar Finnish lineup with touted 2019 draft prospect Kaapo Kakko possibly on the same line or even on the powerplay…a player touted as the next Patrik Laine…so Palmu is in good fucking hands returning to a team that ACTUALLY knows how to deploy him. My fingers are crossed he lights it the fuck up and the guy gets an immediate chance with a big club, because the g uy is just as creative and crafty as Jonathan Dahlen, but wasn’t given the opportunity. I know it’s a bad comparable, but Palmu looked FUCKING GOOD at the young stars and prospects games this past summer, don’t believe everything you read when people say he’s a bust because he was benched….he was benched cause the coach had no idea how to use him and decided a 4th line plug would be the best deployment.

Ineptitude my friends…that’s all it is….all the best to Palmu, I’m actually upset I wont be able to watch Liiga, because TPS has got a pretty nutty lineup this year. Rambling aside, let’s get into tonight’s game where the Comets face off against the Binghamton Devils! The last time they fought, Eric Tangradi tried to murder Ashton Sautner on the ice and got away with a single game suspension…fingers crossed he doesn’t try to take off his skate and try to stab anybody.

RE: Benchings

Gadjovich benched once again in favor of Tanner MacMaster who as far as I’m concerned has looked fairly meh the past few weeks. I get that MacMaster is also technically an undrafted “prospect.” But If you’re not gonna sub out MacMaster, then sub out Lind who’s just been absolutely lost out there the last couple weeks. Gadjovich (like Palmu before him) has had a phenomenal couple of games where he looked like he just suddenly hit a switch and was playing well in spite of his skating issues. But its Cull and Johnson so I’m sure it’s a “compete issue” or because Zack MacEwen switched gears this season and has been lighting it up it means they know what they’re doing and thus we (the fans and speculators) don’t.

RE: INJURY REPORT

Dylan Blujus returns to the lineup after taking a rest Wednesday; he went down during the game Saturday holding his arm gingerly…not sure what happened but glad to see he’s returned to the lineup. Sitting for him is Jagger Dirk, who unfortunately for him actually had a lights out game on Wednesday playing alongside Saucerman

Johnson made a comment on TSN 1040 earlier today that Chatfield’s broken bone was likely to keep him out for at least a couple more months. So that’s Sautner, Juolevi AND Chatfield out for quite some time with lengthy recoveries. Could be a good opportunity for Saucerman to capitalize on his social media boom and earn himself a permanent slot on the team.

Streamable Clarity Improvement Notice

Continuing with last issues theme, going to be Players full name (jersey number) – place in streamable (if not outright obvious) then every sub sequential play featuring that player it’ll be last name(jersey number) – place in streamable (if not outright obvious) I’m also going to reduce the amount of hyperlink in the GOAL streamables, since that’s what I think MOST people are here for and don’t want some gaudy blue taking up the screen.

1st period

Comets in White

Score at the end of the first period: 1-0 Comets

Really bizarre first period, Comets had like 99% of the possession but only managed to get 6 shots actually on net. Binghamton apparently recorded 3 shots total but I find that hard to believe. Good possession from the guys, just need to shore up on their passing game to really dominate if they keep up the possession stats from the first period

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 2-2 Tie

Comets get pretty heavily outshot for the 2nd period; pretty much the exact opposite of the 1st period, where Binghamton led with possession by a wide margin. Coupled with some fairly lazy penalties from the Comets…wasn’t pretty…thank god for Jasek and Darcy combining for a great goal to tie the game.

3rd Period

Final Score: 5-2 Comets

Takeaways

  • Not the prettiest game from the Comets…heavily outshot and out-possessed for the 2nd and 3rd period but hey they got the goals when it counted…Mackenzie blackwood has just gotten lit the fuck up in every meeting against the Comets…it’s pretty hilarious
  • Fuck Eric Tangradi
  • If Dahlen is out for some time the Comets are going to hurt pretty bad…Tanner MacMaster and Kole Lind are not nearly ready enough to step up into a Top 6 role and it showed tonight. MacMaster had some moments tonight but generally looked behind the play in most instances and rarely could get anything going offense wise

Comets Three Stars

  1. Thatcher Demko – I might have to just make a preface before every one of my three stars ratings and just say that Thatcher is automatically the 1st star, because he steals games for this team every time he starts…the Comets that played tonight should by all means NOT have won…but the guy is just so composed in net its insane
  2. Zack MacEwen – call him up, the guy is ready….provided the guy gets out his nerves in his first call-up game, I don’t doubt he would be able to produce on a line with Granlund or Gaudette, the guy (I hate to use tired hockey phrases) but he plays a 200 ft game and can score 5v5, has great puck and stick handling…the dude has just wowed me everytime he plays man. Call him up. The guys a beauty..stop calling up Boucher…stop calling up Archie….bring up the new blood…Ended the night with 1 goal and a team leading 6 shots
  3. Lukas Jasek – ended the night with a +/- of 3, a goal and an assist, some quality playmaking and passes, the guy was legit tonight, one of the unspoken heroes of the team the last couple weeks…whether Cull notices his game is beyond me though

What’s Next?

The Comets will be riding a 4 game win streak when they visit the Charlotte Checkers for a 2 game away stint in Charlotte. The Checkers are on a 4 game win streak themselves, with their most recent victory coming in a 1-0 Victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack on Thursday. The Checkers are 2-0 against the Comets in their season record so far, with the Comets losing their first game 4-3, and their second 3-1. The Charlotte Checkers currently lead the AHL with an absolutely stunning 20-6-1-0 record…a points% of .759 which is just ridiculous. They also lead the league with the lowest goals against, but I don’t say these things to discourage us Utica followers! The Comets have turned around a pretty dismal season and have found themselves in 3rd place in the North Division with 2 points separating them from the 2nd place Syracuse Crunch and 1 point from the 4th place Cleveland Monsters! So Sunday and Tuesdays matchups against the Checkers will be telltale games for the Comets as they see if they can maintain their impressive 5v5 scoring strength against much stronger competition.

12/12/18 – Utica Comets vs. Providence Bruins

Can I get an F in the comments for Ashton Sautner

Yes, one of the Comets most reliable defenceman of late was officially put on IR for an undisclosed amount of time as he recovers from a broken orbital, cheek AND nose.

The AHL did suspend Eric Tangradi the other day for the egregious hit, but at 1 game, its hard to not consider the suspension a complete fucking joke. Given how reckless and dangerous Tangradi’s hit was on a head-down Sautner. It’s kind of incredible he got away unscathed. Tangradi even boldly tried to apologize on twitter, justifying that he had his arms down the entire time and thus wasn’t intending to injure SAutner on the play….gimme a fuckin break.

nbsp;

With last weeks games being an absolute wrecking ball to the Comets D-line; Dylan Blujus ALSO joined Sautner on IR, when during play on Saturdays game, Blujus fell awkwardly on his arm and was nursing it before leaving the ice. Filling in however, is Yukon Cornelius a.k.a Colton Saucerman, a.k.a the most glorious hockey name the Comets could’ve possibly called up on short notice. The Sauce had spent most of his time in the ECHL with the Manchester Monarchs, only recently being moved to the Idaho Steelheads where he quickly put up 8 points in 10 games. Filling in for Sautner will be no easy task but between he and Jagger Dirk, I’m sure they’ll be able to pull their weight to attempt to fill the void!

Like I said, With the Comets hemorrhaging key players from their forward and defensive group, it will be interesting to see how Trent Cull balances his lineup tonight… The Sauce and Dirk will most likely be sliding into very demanding roles right out the gate, so i assume he’ll be expecting some pretty straightforward traditional hockey play from his veterans, nothing flashy or fancy (at least I hope)…If I see a bunch of blind back passes to nowhere I’ll be pretty choked…now more than ever this team can’t afford defensive lapses without key members of their defensive core to compensate

RE: Benchings

Gadjovich and Palmu continue their stretch of benchings. IIRC Cull usually rolls these two out for Friday games, so it really isn’t a surprise at this point. Gadjovich has been looking steadily better and better the past couple games, and both he AND Palmu played with some serious fire when they were slotted in the same game together, so the time will come, but with the Comets despearately needing defensively reliable players…that time…is just not quite tonight!

1st period

Comets in White

1st period score: 2-0 Comets

The Comets had some real gud hockey this period; playing a nice and simple game, nothing too fancy or flashy, lot of successful break-in attempts from the wings. I love these games where the Comets opt to NOT resort to blind drop-passes on every break-in and instead rely on their speed to accomplish things.

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 2-1 Comets

Providence outshot the Comets 16 to 6 in the second period; Super undisciplined play at times. Demko didn’t have too many highlight reel saves, but given that he was 15/16. It’s safe to say he’s the only reason tonight’s game remained a lead for the Comets. Hopefully some more disciplined 5v5 play will come this next period. The Comets start the third on a powerplay so IN THEORY…we should be getting more than 6 shots to close this game out.

Takeaways

  • Despite an absolutely horrific second period showing, the Comets proved resilient, and keep making me have to eat my own words as the team continues to find even-strength scoring from all lines in the wake of Carcone’s absence
  • Thatcher Demko is still so fucking unreal for this team. I don’t know any other goalie that faces as rough of a 2nd period as the Comets did tonight and get away with it. 15/16 saves in the second, 10/11 in the third period. Demko is just such a pro out there; clutch as hell
  • I know a lot of people will think I’m just hyping him up cause of the beard, but Colton Saucerman was huge tonight. Not many defenceman get called up from the ECHL and immediately get slotted in a special team’s role their first game and are depended on in practically all other scenarios. Guy was given powerplay time, defensive starts, offensive starts; I was genuinely worried how this team would be without Chatfield, Juolevi, Blujus AND Sautner for this game, but the Sauce was huge tonight, as was his D partner Jagger Dirk…both were absolutely clutch tonight for Utica

Comets Three Stars

  1. Thatcher Demko – see above…guy was absolutely clutch tonight. You can blame the AHL cameramen for having such poor reaction times, so a lot of his saves tonight were on lightning quick one-timer that the camera guys weren’t keeping up with…but yeah, the stats speak for themselves 31 saves on 33 shots, only 2 goals against and they were completely unlucky tips in front.
  2. Reid Boucher – despite his shortcomings defensively; his lack of aggressive backchecking or board work, the guy still puts up terrific offense in the AHL…he’s basically a less selfish version of Carcone, just without the speed. I can see why he got benched by Cull in that one game, because for all his offensive prowess the guy is just soooo lethargic when it comes to defensive work. If he didn’t have 2 goals and 1 assist with 7 shots, he’d probably be benched again, but I don’t think any coach can deny what he brings to the ice 5v5.
  3. Colton Saucerman/Jagger Dirk – both guys stepped up huge as fill-ins for the Comets staple blue-liners in Sautner and Blujus. Jesse Graham was having a great offensive game tonight, but defensively had quite a number of gaffes. Dirk and the Sauce were sound offensively and defensively tonight, were pinching up at key moments with success, and had good speed on their backchecking. Not to mention being quite effective on what ended up being a very demanded Comets penalty kill unit. Really great stuff from the ECHL PTO’s!

What’s Next?

The Comets riding a 3 game win streak are back at home this Friday when the Binghamton Devils visit once again. Ironically, Fridays game will see the return of Eric Tangradi, who will be coming off his LENGTHY….AND I MEAN, UNIRONICALLY LENGTHY 1…COUNT EM….1 GAME SUSPENSION… for his brutal elbow to Ashton Sautners face that will keep him out of action for the next several months. The Comets absolutely decimated the Devils 7-4 in that game, and I’m sure they will want to keep that tradition up at home to avenge their fallen comrade. The Devils last two games they’ve been outscored collectively 10 to 2. So haha. Fuck you Devils and your shit ass farm team. Fingers crossed for another game where we absolutely embarrass their goalie!

12/8/18 – Utica Comets vs. Binghamton Devils

What’s happening R/Canucks, I passed out about 6 minutes after posting last night’s Farmies, then was up for 4 hours coughing up my lungs, then sleeping for another 3 hours, then again more coughing. IN THEORY, I should be rested enough to be able to put together a more dynamic Farmies issue. Last night I feel like there may have been more minor aspects of our rookie’s games that could have been captured, but I was just so out of it, it started getting really tough to stay focused. So I’m hoping tonight’s installment will be more encompassing and true to the original goal of the Farmies!

Last night was a game that I’m still in a bit of disbelief after having watched; between the rookies all slotting into the lineup and having impactful and meaningful games, the minor league style fighting/cheapshots or the post-game staredown at center ice; I truly don’t think any game going forward will be able to top the magic that was last night. Like think about it…the team was without Carcone AND was Reid Boucher, two of their top 5 point getters and playing with 4 lines featuring a checking winger and a skill/scoring winger…By all accounts last night’s game should’ve been this dull affair where nobody scores and Demko is left high and dry once again. BUT THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN! The whole team showed up to FUCKING PLAY.

Tonight the Comets are facing a team who’s had their number all season in the Binghamton Devils, fortunately the Devils have lost back-to-back games and are winless in 7 of their last 10, with their most recent loss being a 5-0 rout against the Syracuse Crunch. If Richard Bachman can have a good showing, and fingers crossed, Trent Cull rolls out the same lines he did last night, we could be in for a competitive game against the Devils.

1st period

Comets in Blue

1st period score: 4-1 Comets

Comets with an absolutely dominant first period, I think this is their first 4 goal period of the season. Shots registered as 13 to 7 for Utica but it really feels like Utica had triple that amount; Absolute domination from them so far. Doubtful Sautner returns into the game as he looked to be in an incredible amount of pain when he went down…if that was the butt end of a stick or an elbow then I wouldn’t be shocked if he maybe had his orbital cracked.

2nd Period

The Score at the end of the 2nd period: 5-3 Comets

This game is literally turning into a repeat of last night’s game against the Thunderbirds. Comets having a bit of a hard time as Blujus went down with an arm injury in the middle of the second so now they’re down to just 4 D. Still, the Comets outshot the Devils 12 to 10 in that period. It will be interesting to see if the Comets can ramp it up again for the third to seal it.

Takeaways

  • Early aggression from the Comets was a godsend, hit them hard and fast, team looked way more cohesive than they have in the past; I love it when they have these games where they ditch the relentless backwards no look passes that always end up in odd-man rushes going the other way. A much more simple passing forward playstyle that leads to more goals and better offense
  • Bachman despite the win still looks very weak in net. Maybe it’s his size, but he appears to have trouble tracking the puck through traffic. Most of the goals against were the result of traffic
  • While I appreciate our team not getting goaded into playing dirty, old school, fight everybody hockey, there really should have been some more kickback on the Sautner elbow. Some really scummy shit once again goes unpunished…but I suppose at that point they were winning and didn’t want to lose off of losing their composure…so its fair I suppose!
  • Goals came from 7 different players tonight, so its good to see the team collectively stepping up in the wake of Carcone’s absence. Much more team oriented gameplay which is great!
  • LOL at Reid Boucher having 2 points on the night but still ending as a -1 in a 7-4 victory. Don’t get me wrong there isn’t much you can do when Bachman can’t control a rebound or see past anyone on his team except for Palmu.

Comets Three Stars

  1. Zack MacEwen – again, I think this guy has cemented himself as the number 1 call-up to the Canucks…great speed, solid offensive instincts, doesn’t need powerplay time to produce, great net front presence, playmaking ability, and his defensive game is coming around really nicely. I think if the Canucks needed a big bodied winger who can score…and I’m being completely hypothetical here because the likelihood of it happening is like 0.0001%…stick him in the top 6 and guaranteed he’d produce. The guys improvement has been nuts
  2. Tanner MacMaster – as the game was kind of slipping by the team in the third, he came up huge with the goal in front of the net to seal it for Utica. He’d struggled for the better part of the last 5-10 games to find a spot on the roster and it was good to see him make a difference tonight
  3. Reid Boucher – negative +/- aside, the guy had a goal and an assist with 7 shots on net. The guy was a machine tonight for the first two periods at least, as he really tried to show the coach why benching him was a mistake. Dad strength + something to prove is a deadly combo

What’s Next?

The Comets return home to face the Providence Bruins on Wednesday; Given how rough the last two games were on the team in terms of cheapshots and rougplay…it will be interesting to see what a game against the Boston B’s farm team will look like.

Dahlen is currently riding a 3 game goal streak so it’ll be great to see him extend it against the B’s at home. Fingers crossed we keep getting more exciting gameplay from the Comets, and toes crossed that we get another game where all our rookies get slotted in again because I really think that worked quite well for the team.
